Dentist says I should get an electric toothbrush. Should I? Which one?

I've never had one before. I've never seen the point. Now I am advised to get one, but is it really any better than manual? and also there is so much choice! I don't need one that flashes and beeps - what do I need?

Any advice gratefully recieved

Dentist here. Sonicare is the best one. It removes more biofilm.

Which one would you recommend? There are so many different Sonicare toothbrushes!

blondiepigtails · 04/05/2024 11:16

My teeth are definitely better for an electric toothbrush. I would also highly recommend a water flosser, the £25 ones on Amazon are brilliant. Your gums will thank you, especially if your teeth are quite close together.

Sainsburys had a brilliant Nectar deal on OralB brushes and heads recently, I got a double brush and charger set for half price a few weeks ago.

@gingercat02 any! I use the entry level at £20

Although the whitening heads are great if you get a lot of tea/coffee/tobacco/wine staining.

Always buy from a big retailer as it's easier to get a refund if it's faulty

I have sonicare . I won one from my dentist . I much prefer it to oral b . The vibrations feel less aggressive.

Recent clinical research shows that the Philips Sonicare is markedly better at reversing gum disease compared with oral B. If you Google you should find this

Yes, i was just going to say it was a shame OP had ordered inferior oral b product,as sonicare is a much better product. Proven over many studies. My dentist only recommends them.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/05/2024 17:43

Studies funded by Philips, most likely.

Kpo58 · 04/05/2024 18:10

Superdrug do their own version of the sonicare which is very good and the heads are a fraction of the price of the official version.

Cheerfulcharlie · 04/05/2024 18:20

I got an Oral B IO 3 to replace my cheaper Oral B Pro electric toothbrush and the difference is massive! Teeth feel so much cleaner with the iO

PaminaMozart · 04/05/2024 18:22

Get the Oral B Genius. Worth every penny.

And floss every day. And use interdental brushes.

LoompaOompa · 04/05/2024 18:25

I've got this one (given to me by dentist friend!) amzn.eu/d/cWaTFFk

I love love love Philips Sonicare but my god they are expensive now. AND, they don't seem to last as long. My first one lasted 10 years, the second one 3 years and the last one 2 years then needed a new charger. They offer a subscription service - yes, they are so expensive you can pay monthly. they are good but why do they have to be so damn greedy.

Roselilly36 · 04/05/2024 19:15

Oral b pro 3000 is a good electric toothbrush, not expensive.

Spidey66 · 04/05/2024 19:20

Oral B. I paid about £30 , half price in Boots at the time.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/05/2024 19:23

That study's from 1997 and looks like it was comparing the older style battery Oral-B with the then pretty new Sonicare - a lot's changed in over 25 years.

Natsku · 04/05/2024 20:19

Definitely worth it, my teeth feel so much cleaner with an electric brush. Mine buzzes every 30 seconds so I do two lots of 30 seconds on my upper teeth and two lots on my lower teeth, then it does a longer buzz to indicate that 2 minutes are up. No more doing a quick 20 second brush because I'm in a rush!

merryhouse · 04/05/2024 20:22

My dentist said I should have an electric toothbrush, so I got one (the one they sold me) and used it for a few years.

Seriously, it was shit.

BearSoFair · 04/05/2024 20:24

Sorry to hijack but has anyone got experience with home ultrasonic cleaners? I have real fear around the dentist and know I need to psych myself up for an actual appointment but are these likely to make any difference in the shorter term?

My brother in law is my dentist and he recommends (and personally does) alternating between oral b and sonic are as they have different actions. Would you agree?

which one was it, and in what way was it 'shit'?

I've found quite a cheap oral b on amazon, half price right now

I got a half-price oral b at the supermarket after I was told the same by the dental hygienist. I tried it for a few months and didn't really like it, and now only use it occasionally and just stick with soft brushes I like, but she looks approvingly at my teeth and says it's working well!

AliCantI · 05/05/2024 00:43

Am I the only one who hates electric tooth brushes? They literally set my teeth on edge and I feel as though they’re vibrating my brain! Might be just another of my weird sensory things - very unpleasant.
