How easy is it to dye fabric?

Specifically, a cotton towelling bath robe - it's white, I would like to dye it light pink. I know there are dyes that work in the washing machine, do subsequent washes come out pink??

very very easy .
Just make sure to run an empty wash afterwards, and give the door seal a wipe as dye can collect in there.

Ive dyed fabric using Dylon.
The pod is good but remember to use it on pre-washed wet fabric or the colour doesnt come out as strong.
Ive only ever used black but no it doesnt transfer once set.

I’ve dyed loads of stuff in the washing machine with Dylon all in one. They come in little plastic barrels. Afterwards I put the machine through a rinse cycle and I put dark colours in the next wash. I’ve never had any problems with left over dye appearing in subsequent washes. Just make sure the dressing gown is properly wet before the dye goes in. So much fun!

I have used black machine dye. I can’t comment on any other colour though as I’ve only used black.

it worked great.

ran the machine empty after, I think the instructions told me to but even if it hadn’t I would have anyway.

I also just in case rewashed everything after it had dried before I wore anything just in case it came off on furniture etc I put in an old white facecloth to check how stained it would get from the newly dyed clothes and iv had more from washing a new pair of black jeans from the shop than from when I used the black dye.

Follow the instructions on a little Dylon in-wash pod to the letter and it'll be absolutely fine.

Bear in mind that the stitching on a cotton dressing gown will probably be polyester, so after you've dyed it the hems will still be white. I don't think that would be a problem on a dressing gown, but it's useful to know.

Yeah the pod ones like this are dead easy

I tend to put a dark wash in after, to be on the safe side, but I’ve never had any colour transfer from the dye.

I just dyed some white t shirts bright pink and do black all the time. So easy using Dylon, you just wash the garment, open the door, throw the pod in, run as instructed then another wash (all on the label very clearly). As per others, I do my next wash with plain blacks or a similar colour to the dye just in case.
Sometimes the thread that it is sewn with doesn't pick up the dye at all or not as much. Either a sharpie or just sewing over with a matching thread works if it bothers you

A word of warning but I used that Peony Pink dye recently and it was very, very bright pink.

Nothing like the picture on the packet at all.

Weigh the fabric dry first, you might find you can put something else in too if the dressing gown is very underweight.

And yes, seconding the sharpie over the undyed thread.

But, it’s very very addictive.

Thanks so much everyone! I'm going to look on Amazon for Dylon pink fabric dye.
