Fun places in (or near) the north east

Me & my 8yo DD recently moved up near Middlesborough from the south east - had never previously been anywhere up north, so it's all new! I'm keen to plan some fun places to visit this year, within maybe a 90 minute drive. DD is neurodivergent & doesn't really enjoy museums unless they're super immersive/ interactive. We went to York dungeons the other week which was brilliant!

Please can anybody recommend places they/ their kids have enjoyed in the NE? Many thanks!

The Forbidden Corner in North Yorkshire is great. It's a huge garden folly. You're given a list of things you can find and you can spend hours exploring. You need to book online. Best saved for months with good weather as there are lots of pressure sensor water squirters - you will get wet. It's a lot of fun.

My 2 love HMS Trincomalee at Hartlepool (to the point we have come down twice from NE Scotland to visit).

Dc1 loves St Mary's Lighthouse and watching the tide come across the causeway.

Barter books in Alnwick is another must do whenever we are passing.

Warkworth Castle on the Northumberland coast is nice. It's a good explore and there's a riverside walk and a few nice shops and a pretty church in the village centre. It's nice and open and green.

If she likes animals, there's a petting farm, with birds of prey as well, in Morpeth. It's called Whitehouse Farm Centre. It gets good reviews.

Durham Cathedral is nice and they have a good cafe and shop. The riverside walk there is good too. There's an indoor market to wander around as well and they often have outdoor markets on selling crafts.

Newby hall has a fantastic adventure playground, take a swimsuit.

Also take a swimsuit or change of clothes to Alnwick gardens.

Also if you are by Alnwick, Edlingham castle is worth a look. It's ruin but set in a little valley with a lovely church next door. The castle has a decidely wonky tower.

Hardwick park. A lovely large lake, lots of wildlife. Some small follies scattered around to play in and explore
