Self employed help!

Hi! Im new here!

I recently (9th March), started a new job after 3 years off after having my 3rd child. I don’t own the company, but technically I come under self employed.
My youngest has started nursery (funded) on my work days. My boss wants to change my hours, so one week I work my full 16 hours, and the other week, I do a half day, so I’m only doing 13 hours that week.

I want to accommodate this, but I also want to keep my funding. Can I do this? How does it work?! I’m so confused!

Will you earn enough?

You can average out your pay, so the 13 hours doesn't matter, but you do need to be earning the equivalent of 16 hours at minimum wage each week - £2,380.

Can your boss change your hours if you're self-employed? Are you definitely set up correctly? Being able to set your own hours is one of the things HMRC use to decide if you are employed or self-employed; alongside being able to send a replacement, etc.

It doesn't sound like a self employed job? But yes you can average out your earnings so as long as you still meet the threshold then that's fine.

If you have a boss surely you’re not self employed?

If you are self-employed and you need to work a minimum number of hours per week on average, then you need to take on other jobs. So if you are cleaning an average of 13 hours a week for Person A, you need to find however many additional hours from Person B to make up the difference. Or because you are self-employed and you set the terms of your own work, you can say no, it's at this rate for a minimum of 16 hours per week (or whatever). This is at the risk that they may find someone else to do the work though.
