Can anyone recommend a deodorant for kids?

My daughter is six. Over the last few weeks I’ve noticed a really strong BO smell from under her arms.

I’ve been washing under her arms with dettol soap every evening but when she comes in from school it’s really strong 😞 I’m really worried about it, she seems too young for this.

can anyone recommend a deodorant for her? Or another way to tackle this? I think I might take her to the doctor but is that an overreaction?

Also I’m trying really hard not to make a big “thing” of this because I don’t want her to be self conscious and upset about it. But her sister is 10 and doesn’t smell like this.

Have a look at the Salt of the Earth brand. I think they are available in Boots and Holland and Barrett but they have a website too.,

Wild is great if you want something kinder to the planet and body.

Thanks. I’ll take her to Holland & Barrett tomorrow and see what they have.

wondered if anyone had any views on how common this is..?

Agree with Wild. I have one and bought one for my daughter (8), she loves it and solves the BO issue. She has a lovely pink refillable case, available at Boot and Sainsburys I think.

PoppingTomorrow · 03/05/2024 14:22

I think you need to take her to the GP. BO isn't normal for 6 year old. A deodorant could be masking another issue.

HoppingPavlova · 03/05/2024 14:24

Another vote for a visit to GP as this is not normal at 6yo. It may be a sign of precocious puberty, so you need to focus on that, not deodorant types at this point.

mogtheexcellent · 03/05/2024 14:25

Yes, BO can be a sign of early puberty. I would go to the GP.

NuffSaidSam · 03/05/2024 14:25

I would take her to the GP, it's not usual for BO to develop so early, could be precocious puberty.

Needmoresleep89 · 03/05/2024 14:27

My son has had this since he was 5, he’s now 6 1/2 and I’ve never considered this would be an issue 😳 maybe I should take him to the gp. He only gets it on really hot days or days with lots of exercise. I use the wild deodorant for him

Illpickthatup · 03/05/2024 14:33

Fussy is really good and natural. You can buy it in Tesco.

Got your wee dig in. Well done.

@ILoveYouItsRuiningMyLife it's not a dig.

It could indeed be precocious puberty, which is a serious endocrine condition. Please do book an appointment with your GP.

LucyWardrobe · 03/05/2024 14:48

My daughter had this too, no other puberty signs. I read that it's common if they eat a lot of dairy- my daughter does so I put it down to this.

We got the solid natural rock type deodorant to start with, just ordered one from Amazon. You have to run it under the tap then apply it so it was a little bit of a faff. She's now 9 and has a refillable wild deodorant and absolutely loves this. She loves that she can choose and change the scents and it seems to work really well for her. If I was dealing with this again I would just start with the wild deodorant straight away.

ditalini · 03/05/2024 14:50

Have a look for information on adrenarche - this is actually a separate process to puberty (but usually happens around the same time) and is caused by the adrenal glands producing androgens, hence BO but also the start of hair growth and potentially acne.

6 is bottom of the range of normal and it doesn't necessarily mean she'll start puberty early.

Still see the GP, but you're not alone and it's not necessarily anything to worry about.

Amx · 03/05/2024 15:35

I don't think it's a dig. I would take her to the gp too, it's not normal and needs checking.

ILoveYouItsRuiningMyLife · 03/05/2024 16:00

Of course it’s a dig. The implication being that I’m too busy fannying around with deodorant to have considered there might be a medical issue underlying it. This is clearly not the case. I did consider it. That’s why I asked the question.

I can buy her deodorant AND take her to the doctor…🤯

Don't be ridiculous. At no point did you state that you had considered it may be due to an adverse underlying cause and had an appointment booked. Your only concern was the deodorant. I was pointing out that your priorities were misplaced. That’s not a dig, but a fact with the information you gave. Now you are saying you have had it medically investigated, you should have put that in as otherwise it’s a bit like someone asking how they mop up litres of blood from someone bleeding out in front of them without stating they have already called an ambulance and have followed instructions given while waiting (obviously people are going to prioritise wanting to make sure you have called for help and followed instruction rather than focusing on telling you how to clean up the mess)!

thankyouforthedayz · 04/05/2024 05:20

The advice to see a GP is fine, but the comment about focussing on this and not deo was a snide dig. Stop gaslighting the OP.

SpringKitten · 04/05/2024 05:46

Just to get us back on track, another vote for Wild.

CrikeyMajikey · 04/05/2024 05:50

Look on Greenpeople online. They do an excellent range of 98% organic deodorants. Wild is good too.

Wallywobbles · 04/05/2024 06:14

Both mine had BO at 7. Tried the rock salt ones to zero effect. Ended up going for sure. Wasn't my first choice.

sometimes the smells are actually in the clothing, so if you can replace them once you start using the new deodorant because otherwise the smell will still be there. There are tips on how to remove BO from clothing but unfortunately for me it hasn’t worked that well!
