Tory MP has no voter ID to vote. Military veteran can't use his voter ID to vote

What a shambles.

A Tory MP hasn't got any voter ID - so had to ask someone to vote for him by proxy.

An Afghanistan veteran used his veteran's card - and that's not on the list so couldn't vote.

Minister ‘sorry’ as veterans find ID cards not valid for English elections | Local elections 2024 | The Guardian

Is this what they planned - or is it a fuck up?

Johny Mercer will be looking at it for veterans - who will be looking at it for other people who haven't got ID.

The Tory MP blamed his dyspraxia. I hope he advocates in Parliament for other people who struggle to get ID. Or will that mean showing empathy?

How could it be what they planned? Voter ID was clearly a non-tory voter suppression move. That they have accidentally excluded members of their own likely electorate makes me laugh and laugh. The Tories can't even be crooked properly, bunch of half-wits.

Sounds like a shit show.

This shouldn't be happening now.

There was nothing wrong with the old system, as far as I know.

My mum asked for a postal vote. Not a single reply. I didn't realise until Tuesday and it's too late.

Yes, applied for postal vote in plenty of time (even though I have always been registered to vote by post at my address and had mysteriously been unregistered as such) Received confirmation I was now registered for postal vote. Received no postal voting pack. That's.

Twats not that's 🤨

I fear that many people are now excluded, due to no fault of their own.

I don’t have a photo I’d driving licence( I e lived here for around thirty years and refuse to pay for one.)
I only got a passport by chance, due to a wedding, otherwise I wouldn’t have that.

why should I have to jump through hoops to prove that I can vote.
’They’ know who we are as we pay tax and council tax.

a sturdy National Insurance card should suffice, like ‘they’ used to issue.

AlltheFs · 02/05/2024 18:02

It’s really not hard to get a Voter Authority Certificate. I don’t have a lot of sympathy for people that can’t be bothered to make the effort, they aren’t exactly “hoops”.

Not sure what your definition of 'hoops' is, but this is clearly an attempt to suppress voting among the unemployed and people who can't get photos developed easily due to access issues, lack of money, lack of ability to read English, and myriad other difficulties.

There are no hoops, if you need help getting a photo the council will help. You can’t help the bone idle, granted, but if someone lacks the capacity to follow those instructions I’m sure they can’t manage to vote either.

The super motivated among the poor and isolated will take the trouble to contact the council for help.

But everyone, including the unmotivated and the isolated and the illiterate, either has the right to vote or they don't.

Either you're living in a democracy (yes, I know it's a constitutional monarchy) or you're living in a state where only the able bodied, the literate, and the highly motivated can exercise the right to vote.

You may not like the people you call 'the bone idle' but they are your fellow citizens and they have the right to vote. Any steps that potentially require the help of the council to claim that right are an impediment to the exercise of their rights as citizens.

And yet from the same website:

Voter ID | Electoral Commission

We know that some groups are more likely to experience barriers created by the voter ID requirement and may need support to access photo ID.

Organisations working directly with voters, including local authorities and charities, can help voters make sure they have photo ID ahead of any election where this requirement applies.
We have produced a set of resources for use in England and Wales ahead of the elections on 2 May 2024. These resources will help organisations raise awareness, and support voters with applying for a Voter Authority Certificate, if needed. This pack also includes information on voter registration, and information tailored to the needs of specific groups.

Voter ID

There is a new requirement to take photo ID to some elections in England, Scotland and Wales.

Is it actually news now when a Tory MP demonstrates they are not very bright?

nozbottheblue · 02/05/2024 19:20

The Veteran's ID card has only existed for 3 months- why would anyone expect it automatically to be a valid form of ID for elections? Surely you'd check in advance, or take another form of ID (as he would have done previously) as back up? He's obviously chosen to be turned away to make a news story. Silly.

Mr Johnson, the PM who introduced the Elections Act requiring photo ID in 2022 , got turned away from polling station after forgetting photo ID

cakeorwine · 02/05/2024 19:34

Voter ID - don't forget to bring it

Boris Johnson was turned away from a polling station when trying to vote in the local elections after forgetting to bring acceptable photo ID.
Sky News understands polling station staff were forced to turn the former prime minister away after he initially failed to comply with legislation he introduced while he was in Downing Street.
Mr Johnson, who introduced the Elections Act requiring photo ID in 2022, was attempting to cast his ballot in South Oxfordshire, where a police and crime commissioner for the Thames Valley is being selected.
At 8am, Mr Johnson had posted on X: "The polls are now open. Vote Conservative today!"

I would love to have been that person!!

Or maybe the rules don't apply to him?

OP posts:
the80sweregreat · 02/05/2024 19:46

Oh no!
The whole ID for voting is a conservative new rule isn't it ? Surely an ex PM of said party would know what to bring along.
(Mind you , he also forgot his own rules about not having any gatherings or parties during a worldwide pandemic , so hey ho, home he goes)

Caswallonthefox · 02/05/2024 19:47

I got a voter ID certificate. Mildly disappointed its not a card.

Basically uses the same principle as any other online form and took my photo, in my hall, with my phone and uploaded it.
Told I was eligible no shit, sherlock. And waited for my certificate to turn up.
It's valid for 10 years.
When I went to vote at about 3pm, mine was the first they'd seen, so it was waved at everyone to show what it looked like.
Now I've got to put it somewhere safe and hopefully not forget it. 🤔

I applied for mine with plenty of time. I realised last week I hadn't heard anything. I chased it up. Apparently my photo wasn't accepted, they'd emailed me to tell me. I never received the email. It was too late to do anything.

So I did what i was told to do. I still couldn't vote. I'm not the only one this has happened to.

Just left it at home

Angela Rayner can't even remember which home she lived in for five years.

cakeorwine · 02/05/2024 19:58

Ignore

That's the best way to deal with certain people.

Can you imagine being the person who had to tell him to return Grin

As for photo ID - Angela Rayner didn't recognise herself in the curry and beer photo in Durham either. Grin
