No electricity for the next 12 hours. Will my fridge freezer contents be ruined?

I've no power until at least the morning.

Will all the food in my fridge and freezer be ruined if it's turned off for so long? They're both quite full.

I don't know why this has only just occured to me. 🤦😭 Got turned off just before 5pm today, will hopefully be being repaired/sorted tomorrow. 😔

Keep the freezer door closed and it should be fine. What’s in your fridge? That should all be ok too, just your milk might go off quicker than normal.

Keep the freezer closed and it might be ok. Quite a few things will tolerate refreezing.

heldinadream · 01/05/2024 19:31

Should all be fine. Try not to open either unless you really really have to. Freezer stuff will almost certainly stay frozen if you keep it shut (being full makes this better by the way).
Fridge stuff might be a bit more vulnerable but again if you can keep it shut it should be OK. If you take milk in tea it's probably worth taking some out so you don't have to keep opening the fridge. Take anything else out that you need tonight so you don't have to open it again.

Thanks. Fridge is mostly fruit and veg, various types of milks, egg, cheese, yogs, the usual stuff I guess. No raw meat in the fridge.

Freezer is stuffed so I'm really hoping that stays okay.

I guess when I get the power back on I'll check how cold it is and how everything in the fridge and freezer look by then.

It will be absolutely fine. Don’t open the doors. You may notice some frosting on the contents but no harm will be done

Spacecrispsnack · 01/05/2024 20:37

Your fridge stuff should be totally fine too, the only thing I’d be careful with is raw meat or fish. Do you have a neighbour who could lend you some ice packs to go in there? That would help keep the temp down.

Why is the power off? If it's a grid problem they'll give you some money, we got £120 recently, our power was on and off for 6 days and the generators they kept giving us kept breaking down though....

boozeclues · 01/05/2024 20:43

Is your freezer is stuffed then the collective temp of the already frozen contents should help keep the temperature regulated. Don’t open the door at all though, however tempting as you could introduce bacteria.

Open everything up a good hour after the electricity works tomorrow and give everything a thorough pong/smell test.

We had no power for nearly 4 days after a storm. Whilst things like peas and bread defrosted, the meat was still frozen. Just keep the freezer and fridge shut and it'll be fine until the morning.

gamerchick · 01/05/2024 20:48

It'll be fine. Especially if they're full. Just don't open the doors for any reason.
