I need to improve my cheese storage and thus life

I have teenagers, I am winging it through life as a single parent and trying not to feel like I’m living in a student house where each person does their own thing. Anyway we get through a lot of cheese, I am bored of finding it not properly cling filmed, and bored of DD using tin foil which sets my teeth on edge.

I feel like if I got a THING from Lakeland/Joseph Joseph/John Lewis it would be a more civilised family home and our cheese would also be better.

Could someone better at this than me please tell me if you have a cheese box and does it work well?

Just use Tupperware boxes? Can get cheap from Poundland. All that clingfilm and foil is so wasteful.

OnlyOneAdda · 01/05/2024 11:58

We use one of these - very good.

I have a cheese box from...sous chef I think. But it's basically a Tupperware box so no real benefit to it.

I have to say, I hate clingfilm on cheese. I feel like it makes it all sweaty. I wrap mine in parchment paper so it can breath a bit.

Tupperware do a special cheese storage box which we have. I suggest the biggest one they make.

Another vote for Tupperware or something similar.

Bananadramallamas · 01/05/2024 13:14

I use a zip lock bag. Cheese doesn't last long enough in our house to need anything else.

Teddleshon · 01/05/2024 13:17

Tell me if you put all your cheese in one of these boxes, does it not go hard / discolour at the edges?

Blackcats7 · 01/05/2024 13:18

Tupperware box and pre cut the cheese into appropriate hunks which might save some of the damage to entire block as teens will (presuming normal levels of laziness!) like not having to go to the effort of cutting it and covering it up themselves.

EggcornAcorn · 01/05/2024 13:18

A tupperware box is fine. I have an actual tupperware box for my cheese, lol. (ancient)

Reusable food storage bag

amylou8 · 01/05/2024 18:37

A nice Tupperware or similar will solve all your problems. I have a bit of a tub obsession, everything comes out of its packet and into a tub. Anything fresh, like salad and fruit, keeps much fresher in a glass tub. TK Maxx have a good range.
I'm with you on the tin foil, that stuff should be banned.

I bought a Meal cheese box but only really use it at Christmas. I do wrap nice cheese in wax paper but if your kids won't re wrap....

Sorry, a MEPAL cheese box

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/05/2024 19:25

I can remember the smell of sweaty cheddar in a Tupperware cheese box from my first boyfriend's house.

Get containers made from other materials - clear, easy to seal - just not Tupperware.

CrapBucket · 01/05/2024 20:54

Thank you for all the recommendations - I have zero Tupperware maybe this is why my life is so hit and miss. I have takeaway containers which aren’t the right size for cheese.

(we just use Tupperware, though Wink)

Breathe! Breath rhymes with death.

I use beeswax wraps but you have to be pretty committed to wrapping well. Otherwise Tupperware is fine (I use that for super long life stuff like Parmesan)

Bargain! I might get two.

We are clearly cheese heathens. We just leave ours in the wrapper it came in and seal it up with a Klippit.

We have lots of different types on the go at any one time so if we took it out of the wrappers and put it in a box we would lose track which cheese is which! I suppose we could have a separate small box for each type and label the box but that feels a bit much.

I just have one large plastic containter very similar to a Tupperware. We buy lots of cheeses so anything that can’t fit in just sits on top if it’s unopened. That way I can find it all.
