He was paid £3000 to go voluntarily

Quite a coincidence this story has leaked a day before the local elections

First failed asylum seeker sent to Rwanda under voluntary scheme - BBC News

I expect Sunak will claim a victory! The little creep

Rwandan capital Kigali

First failed asylum seeker sent to Rwanda under voluntary scheme

The asylum seeker received £3,000 and went under a scheme separate to the forced returns scheme.

It's also a red herring as the point of the scheme is that the claim will be processed in Rwanda, this volunteer has already had his claim rejected here.

After so much coverage I'm somewhat pleased this may now be in effect as I'm curious what the numbers will prove re the crossings. Agree about the timing, it was prioritised in the houses to get to this stage.

A desperate ‘show’ deportation to show that Rishi has got Rwanda done. Shameless, pointless and pathetic electioneering at its finest

Jeezitneverends · 01/05/2024 08:49

£3000…that they’re admitting to!

BlastedPimples · 01/05/2024 08:53

How many Rwandans have come here seeking asylum?

The whole thing is an appalling farce.

The scheme is meant to act as a deterrent. Thousands have already fled and crossed the boarder into Ireland to escape being deported to Rwanda so that in itself should prove its already working. But ofcourse the left minded on mumsnet will never admit to its success no matter what. What exactly is Labour proposing to do about it? All I’ve heard so far talk about tackling the criminal gangs but nothing of any substance.

somewhereovertherain · 01/05/2024 13:09

Can we just send Sunak and the tory party to Rwanda and be done with them

underscorer · 01/05/2024 13:10

It's a complete embarrassment. The world is rightly laughing at this country.

But those people have fled because they have already tried to establish roots over here. In my city in England the refugees and asylum seekers get involved in the community, work in cross-nation groups to settle in and then they are uprooted without warning to be sent somewhere else - let alone Rwanda.

I have personally met people who crossed in small boats. They were a chef and an architect in their original countries but fled due to religious persecution. I totally believe what they told me, I saw the photos of their families. Perhaps if others actually met these people they would be more sympathetic.

He was probably sick of the weather.

I imagine their usual reaction which is to clutch their pearls and say isn't it awful while simultaneously criticising everything the Tories do to address the issue at the same time as criticising them for not doing enough

£3000 and 5 years bed and breakfast. To a volunteer they could have just deported for the cost of a flight.

If it turns out to be true his plan was to work in Rwanda anyway this is going to be a comical farce. He’s just fleeced the government out of the cost of a flight, 3K and his living costs being paid for.

Not sure come to the UK and if you don’t have a genuine claim for asylum we’ll give you 3k is the deterrent the government has pretended it’s going to be.

Eyesopenwideawake · 01/05/2024 13:21

And thousands have disappeared and are unable to be traced by the Home Office...

@CroftonWillow - people arriving in Rwanda will be processed for asylum in Rwanda, not in the UK. They can not apply for asylum in the UK once the have been deported, unless they escape and travel back again.

No, this is a different scheme. We still haven’t got anybody to Rwanda under the bill you are talking about. We won’t for ages, if ever.

Icanseethebeach · 01/05/2024 13:22

No one has been sent to Rwanda. One man has volunteered to go to Rwanda in return for payment and free accommodation. This is a completely different scheme to the plan to deport people to Rwanda.
