So i am still learning to drive, bought a little renault clio from a private dealer for £900, its been to the garage for a health check and its going to cost 2k to have all the issues fixed! Arghh! I don't want to pay it because its more than the thing is worth.

Do we just sell it ? What are webuyanycar like?

Worth noting that an MOT does not check mechanical condition- it does not check the engine, gear box or clutch -these are all very expensive to repair if faulty.

An MOT is a must if buying a car for me, but it’s not a guarantee that a car is any good mechanically.

I'd be inclined to fix it. £2900 for a working car is not a bad price.

The idea that you would get a car in any sort of decent condition for £900 is laughable.

So a bit of work on it and it's done. Cars do need maintaining. They are machines and parts wear out. I don't understand the mentality of "more than it's worth": my car is 20 years old and "worth" £600 according to my insurance. But to purchase an equivalent car in the same condition would be over £10k at least because it all works and is looked after and maintained well.

Clearly know nothing about cars and what they are worth. A dealer selling a car for 900 and then immediately having to pay 2k to make it road worthy, is indeed a bad price to pay.

Get recommendations for a local, independent dealer that offers a three month warranty, that way if any issues come up they'll fix them.

Dont go to we buy any car. Google local breakers yards, speak to at least 2 yards. Give them all the specs and pics of the car and ask them to give you a price. Then call up two more and tell them you want more than the previous bid. Repeat this by speaking to more yards until you get the best price you are happy with. I did this with my written off car and went from being offered 5k by insurance to getting 11k from a breakers 50 miles away and they came and took the car themselves. Also, do not let them take the car until you have cash in the bank. They can transfer same day they take it. Would also recommend having a friend or family member that knows about cars and can deal with used car people to call them or be there when they turn up as they will play hardball but you can come out with a much better deal if you can push back on them but helps if you can let them know you wont put up with any crap. Good luck !

Is there a a reason you are not going back to the dealer? Even with a car, your rights are not affected and they should at the very least be giving you a refund or doing the work to improve it so it's at least safe to drive

@BoxFoxSocks I agree I've got an old car as well and to buy a similar quality car would cost way more than I can afford.
But a few 100 pounds a year seems more affordable.
