Poorly dog 3 days before holiday

So we're due to fly out on Friday (holiday of a lifetime, kids really excited) and one of our dogs is sick...

He's had diarrhea since the weekend which I've been trying to treat at home as he's otherwise well but this morning I've noticed blood in his poo and now I'm freaking out. We have a vets appointment for later on today but I assume any tests they do will take a few days to get results back.

I'm also assuming that the dog boarding place we use won't take a sick dog if there's any chance it's contagious. There's no one else to look after him as they're all worried about their dogs catching whatever it is.

Has anyone been in this situation? After the vet visit, the plan is to call insurance on the off chance we're covered and ask the travel agent if there's any possibility of reselling our holiday (seems unlikely though!)

Arghhhhh why does this shit happen right before a holiday 😭
Any advice welcome!

How much blood and is it bright red?
If its just a bit and DDog is otherwise fine I would hold off on the vet

Ahh, that’s bad luck OP. Hope it works out.

@EatCrow Thanks so much!

@Hoppinggreen not loads, but enough to worry me. I've been holding off until today but can't drop him off at the boarders on Friday knowing that he might be infectious, not to mention shitting in their house (had to let him out every hour or so last night)

The blood could just be due to an infection and your dogs system being overworked. Vet maybe able to give your dog something to help with upset tummy, and fingers crossed that'd solve it.

If insurance doesn't cover cancellation, could one of you stay at home and other(s) go? That way, not everyone misses out on the holiday. It seems harsh now, but in the long scheme of things, there are worse things that happen. If money permits, whoever stays at home can have a few treats etc.

Can't one of you stay home with the dog until he's better then fly out afterwards?

I wouldn't cancel a whole family holiday for this,

Whyoohwhyohwhyyyy · 30/04/2024 14:33

@Toomuch44 That's what I'm hoping the vet says and nothing more serious.
Yep if all else fails one will have to stay home. Was going to say we'll draw straws but my husband would probably love a week in the garage by himself 😂

Are you on top of his worm treatments? One of my cats had loose, urgent stools, which then progressed to having blood in them. He was on the edge of his 3 months for the worming tablet, vet did his worm treatments, gave him some probiotics and he was fine in a day or so

Update
So the vet has given us some panacur worming treatment which apparently kills more parasites than the wormer we have at home. And I've spent a fortune on some special food to help his digestive system recover plus pro-kolin. If no better by Friday they will run tests.

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed. Thanks for everyone's advice and we'll wishes!
