Well, at least on the face of it, your job is SO much more interesting that mine 😫 And I'm too old to retrain now 🤣

I have a magpie hankering after a ring with a coloured stone. I love the unboxing reels on FB and IG. Sometimes it's antique that I'm drawn to. Mainly art deco which my daughter tells me look like "old lady rings". Sometimes it's modern but second hand stuff that catches my eye.

I have some money available. A decent sum left to me. But I can't be frivolous or careless.

How do I learn about the stuff I'm looking at? Or find someone to trust? Or even better take advice from?

Recently I've hankered after a modern 13ct aquamarine ring but also a sapphire ring from the 1700s!! I've become drawn to a long standing shop/merchant based in Ireland. (I'm UK)

It's overwhelmingly. And feels open to abuse. The small town I live in has no options.

How can I purchase and be confident of not being ripped off? What would be a good buy vs a bad one? Not necessarily an "investment" but I guess that would be sensible. Or where can I learn to make good choices as a lay person?

Or just send screen shots of things you like so that we can all swoon together? 🤣

This website has info on aquamarine identification and qualities. I wouldn't worry too much about heat treatment to a gemstone as it is "considered to be a natural type of enhancement as it is a continuation of the processes that occur in the earth when the stone was originally formed." https://www.gemselect.com/gem-info/heat-treatment.php

Because of the huge markup on retail prices, unless it is a very desirable piece, you would be unlikely to make a profit, if you sold it.

Named after the color of sea water, aquamarine is readily available and moderately priced. Learn what makes the March birthstone an excellent jewelry stone.

Here are rings that I had made for me in lockdown for a big anniversary. Sounds much fancier than it was. But he DID post gems to me through Royal Mail so that I could choose 🤣

One ring is Peridot. One is topaz. Diamonds down the shoulders. And beautifully crafted (can't upload a 4th photo to show the back and how they fit together) so that they fit together and do not "lob" to one side.

Oh they are amazing! I love them!

Diamonds are not generally a great investment, 80% of all diamonds mined are in a vault, bought up to keep prices high and prices are going down fast due to lab made diamonds being "superior" (no defects, perfect colour).
I've always been told the best for holding value is a good emerald followed by ruby.

80% in a vault...that's depressing. And I don't want a lab grown diamond. I'd rather have smaller and know that it was created in the earth over time. 😍

I’ve inherited a bit of money and recently lost so much weight (not sick!) that my wedding and engagement rings just fall off. This week, I got my gran’s replacement cheapo engagement ring repaired (stone missing) and I’m using my great grandmother’s wedding ring to keep mine on.

Whilst at the (very old fashioned ) jewellers, I was drooling over the aquamarine rings but then got sidetracked by the emeralds and rubies. I don’t want my engagement ring reset, the stone is a very dark sapphire and I want something colourful and sparkly. This thread is giving me great ideas! I’m going to take my time to find something I love. I need to go back to the jewellers, my engagement ring has also lost a stone/claw. Help!

This one for me on Debruns please. 😍 (Have hands like plates, vintage rings never going to do me well.🤣)

Nothing to do tonight except drink wine and google....you see right. The vintage rings while beautiful are rather fine and delicate 🙄
