How long till you give it when belongings don't go ?

I've got 2 boxes of stuff we've outgrown or dont want any more in my loft that I've been storing up over the 7 months or so . And though I've been selling some of it on vinted and local for sale sites some stuff just hasn't sold or isn't worth putting up for sale but more suitable for a boot sale.

How long is a reasonable amount of time to just charity the stuff that doesn't sell or even store it up for a boot sale ? The boxes is don't need and it's out of my way but also there's just something that makes me think it's up there and that bothers me

Personally I'd probably get rid of it once I'd put it on Vinted or erBay and it didn't sell.

MrMrsMoon · 30/04/2024 09:12

There's no should or shouldn't. Personally I'd give it away as I find having space more important than getting a little bit of money back.

Gymmum82 · 30/04/2024 09:14

I used to keep it for ages. Now I don’t even try and sell it. It’s not worth my time and energy for the money. I just bag it up and charity shop it all. It’s so freeing to just get it out of the house

Houseofpainjumparound · 03/05/2024 06:18

I've got stuff that's several years old. As I am constantly selling older bits eventually sell.

When I do a boot sale at the end I make up a box of stuff I am fed up of seeing and either take to our local swap shop or charity.

Doingmybest12 · 03/05/2024 06:28

If you can't sell it then why wait, just make sure is is actually something charity shops would like though.

EmmyA87 · 03/05/2024 06:32

I’m the same, I have a pile that’s already on Vinted and then another pile waiting to be uploaded. Last year I uploaded a load of stuff I think it was around beginning of September, what hadn’t sold by near the end of October I did the last boot sale of the season and sold the lot! Made almost £300. Whatever didn’t sell I took to the dump as there’s a clothing charity bin there. I’d say give it a few weeks and then do a car boot with whatever’s left.

DottyLottieLou · 03/05/2024 07:29

If its bothering you just get rid.

HereWeGoRoundAgain · 03/05/2024 08:13

I never sell, always charity shop. I simply cannot be bothered with the amount of time and effort it takes to do it. Taking proper pictures, upload everything, bag it, label it, post it. Assuming you get a sale. Charity shop the lot, crappy stuff I label separately for ragging. Done and dusted.

Imisssleep2 · 03/05/2024 08:25

If you have the storage space and it's not in your way then there isn't a timeline. I personally don't have the patience to post everything I have for sale online, so I am going to do a boot sale with all the kids clothes etc and then what I bring home will look at putting on vinted, but like you I have the space to store it just not the time to list it all and be messed around by buyers even though vinted would probably be more profitable. I will prob do one or two boot sales a year, if I still have an item after two sales and on vinted then I will prob donate to charity.

PinkLurker · 03/05/2024 09:10

Donare to a Charity Shop. Any clothes items not suitable for selling can be sent to
a dealer who will collect and pay the Charity by weight.

AlltheFs · 03/05/2024 09:15

It’s your stuff, reasonable is anything from 0 to infinity.

I keep some stuff for decades and sone stuff for weeks. If it’s bothering you, get rid.

I have got some things that are irritating me because we need the space, but if my brother does have a child then I’d want him to have it. So I’m keeping that until the point I can’t stand it.

But I also have some clothes I could sell but I can’t be bothered and they are in the boot to go to the charity shop.

I agree. I donate to the clothing bank. It is very freeing to get rid of unwanted items, especially If you know that you are doing something good.

IvorTheEngineDriver · 03/05/2024 09:20

One day. If I need the space, it's out.

socialdilemmawhattodo · 03/05/2024 14:37

I list for perhaps a month - ebay is now free to list clothing and they do 80% off final value fee weekends for other stuff. After that I review my price - another 2-4 weeks if no interest off to charity. I always gift aid donations. Again like other pps if stuff is clearly marked/torn etc then that goes in a separately labelled rag bag. Saves the charity shop volunteers for needing to sort.

PurplGirl · 03/05/2024 17:57

As soon as the kids outgrow it, I make 3 piles. 1 goes straight to charity shop. The second goes on Vinted (seasonal stuff for the upcoming season). The third in a bag ready to put on Vinted for the next season. If the Vinted stuff hasn’t sold by the end of the relevant season, I offer it to friends/acquaintances (it’s all decent stuff), then what’s left goes straight to charity. So nothing is kept for longer than 1 year. Most gone either immediately or within 6 months.

muddyford · 03/05/2024 18:02

I always give it to a charity shop.

TulipBluebells · 03/05/2024 18:04

It really depends. I’ve got a home office so I can store things for ages. Once in awhile I get fed up and donate loads.

some people like to get rid after they haven’t sold for a week. It really depends on your situation.

DatingDinosaur · 03/05/2024 18:39

It's car boot season so give that a go - it's surprising what people will buy if they feel they've haggled you down to 20p from £1. All those 20p's add up. Work on the principle of getting rid of stuff at any cost, not making as much money as possible. Have a 'final reductions' box about an hour before you're ready to leave - everything 20p. You might as well make SOME money as give it away to charity. Also pre-box stuff and label it with a description of the contents and a fixed price for the box - the professional car booters will buy in bulk like this (they still try to haggle though).

Anything that doesn't sell, either bin it or charity.
