What the hell is biting me?

2 weeks ago I woke up with a cluster of itchy bites. I immediately thought bed bugs and went into a frenzy of cleaning, washing etc. we bought a new mattress, scoured every crevice of the room.
Two night later, another little cluster. Both sets of bites were along the waistline of my pyjamas.
I bought bedbug traps. Still not a single sign of them. No marks on the sheets, nothing. My DH is not getting bitten (or possibly he is, but isn't reacting to them).
I read that bedbugs cannot bite through clothes, so I have been going to bed completely covered up, all tucked in, including my trousers tucked into long socks. At this point I am beginning to lose the plot.
I am still getting bites. This morning I have two bites on my big toe. What on Earth is biting me through Ski socks??
I'm fairly sure it's not hives, it doesn't in any way look like scabies.
Please someone help me.

Could you have developed an allergy to washing powder?

hedgehoglurker · 30/04/2024 08:31

Fleas - do you have pets? Mosquitoes?

Funkadoodledoo · 30/04/2024 08:40

Could be fleas, you dont need to have pets to get those in the house particularly if previous occupiers had pets. Mosquitoes can bite through clothes.

Are you out in the garden much in the evenings? I woke up with bites along my waistband and ankles a few mornings ago, but pretty sure it was midges/ mozzies from gardening at dusk the day before and the bites just took a few hours to reach peak itchiness!

CleftChin · 30/04/2024 08:58

I used to get what I'm pretty convinced were spider bites on my eyelids (only part of my body outside of the bed, no flying insects, no bedbugs, and I once caught a spider dangling down from the ceiling..

Norugratsatall · 30/04/2024 09:14

I would bet it's mosquitoes. April is prime time for them (breeding) and there are loads of giant mutant fuckers about this year! DH and I have been eaten alive since approx mid March. We surmised that they may be breeding in stagnant water in our water butt as we've had so much rain so we drained it. Things have improved somewhat since. You have my sympathies, our bites were huge and very itchy and I had no less than 70. Found several mozzies in the house and couldn't believe how big they were!

Thingsthatgo · 30/04/2024 09:19

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I considered fleas, and we do have a dog. I have combed her through with a flea comb 3 times, and she gets treated monthly with the stuff from the vet. She did have fleas once before, and it was very obvious- she was distraught!
It could be an allergy, but it really looks and feels like bites. Maybe it's just midges or mosquitoes.

Are the bites in a line? Pics?

Thingsthatgo · 30/04/2024 09:28

The original clusters of bites have faded now, they were itchy for 3 or 4 days and the red marks faded after a week. The clusters had 6 or 7 bites in an area of about 5cm square. Recently the bites have been single or in 2s.
Perhaps the original bites were a different insect, a rogue bedbug or flea, and now it's mosquitoes.

I experienced this last year, did all the things you are doing and in the end I had to accept it was mosquitoes from gardening.

INeedNewShoes · 30/04/2024 10:03

I had mystery bites a few years ago. Then one day noticed a cluster of insects in the corner of the ceiling above my bed. It was bird mites from a starling that had got into the loft space.

Thingsthatgo · 30/04/2024 10:35

Bird mites! New fear unlocked.
There are birds nesting in the eaves next door, but not in our house as we sealed it all up last year.

This!

My DH had a really similar experience. He's very prone to being bitten by mozzies and was adamant he was being bitten at night,(so we had the bedbug and the flea fear too). He wasn't getting a rash like a 'typical' allergy. It was biggish, angry, sore red lumps exactly like bites always where his clothing was tightest like his waistband.

It drove us crazy trying to figure it out because there was no evidence of bugs. After deep cleaning made no difference, we swapped to non-bio washing powder and it completely cleared up.

Thingsthatgo · 30/04/2024 14:37

Thank you to the posters who suggested allergies. We use non bio already, but I will try another brand to be sure.

I'd assume midges (or mosquitoes). I sometimes get bitten along the waistband/ankles when I go out for a couple of minutes to get laundry in or take the bins out early evening. I don't necessarily notice immediately, but when you get into bed you get warmer and they start to really itch.
