What would you do or buy to cheer yourself up a bit

Don't really have anything to add. What would you do or get to give yourself a pick me up when times are a bit tough?

OP posts:

I always feel happier whan I buy another plant

onwardandupwards · 30/04/2024 04:03

I feel happier after I've baked something or had a mug of tea with my favourite blanket over me in absolute silence! ( it's a rare thing) or playing uno with my 19 year old ds.

SOxon · 30/04/2024 04:06

buy flowers in Aldi, cheap and last long -
something tasty to eat,
walk through the town
charity shops, Oxfam bookshop
between downpours, that is

youtube if its evening, cat videos never fail,
or Anwar and ‘self defense’ (against his mum)
laughter is the best medicine

We are all fed up atm OP, feeling sluggish, times
are indeed tough, but soon as summer sunshine
is here we will all feel better, I hope you are ok.

Powderblue1 · 30/04/2024 05:57

Chinese food!

Or a lovely walk for a mooch at vintage items and books in the charity shops alone.

Beatrixslobber · 30/04/2024 05:58

Flowers

UnpickThePockets · 30/04/2024 06:00

Go to the gym
Go for a long walk with my binoculars (bird spotting)
Gardening

Basically, move my body.

IamII · 30/04/2024 06:09

Tattoo!

Unabletomitigate · 30/04/2024 06:36

Head to the charity shops for a browse.

xSideshowAuntSallyx · 30/04/2024 06:38

Go to the gym, go for a bike ride or do both. Anythings that doesn’t cost money. Spending money to cheer myself up is a slippery slope and what got me into the mess I'm in financially.

qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty · 30/04/2024 06:39

I'd do something, so either create something (cooking, craft, gardening) or go for a long walk.

NeverGuessWho · 30/04/2024 06:44

I go to my 18 year old DS and ask him for a hug. He gives the best hugs you could ever ask for. Then sit down with a brew in silence, and think about all the things that I have in my life that I'm grateful for, and reflect on how much better life is since leaving my abusive and controlling ex husband. It always lifts my spirits.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 30/04/2024 06:59

I'd buy myself a theatre ticket for a matinee performance

uncomfortablydumb53 · 30/04/2024 14:33

I always feel better after I've washed my hair so I'd do that even if I'd washed it the day before
Buy some flowers and my favourite chocolate.

passtheajax · 30/04/2024 14:36

A plant for the garden.

Something nice from the halal shop as the things they sell are different to the mundane supermarket stuff. I've bought some rose jam today and some halva.

crumpet · 30/04/2024 14:38

Get out for a walk

luckylavender · 30/04/2024 15:19

Flowers.

fussychica · 30/04/2024 16:03

Go to a zumba class and have a coffee with the girls after. Always gives me a lift and because the weather has been so dire its been a sanity saver!
Go on another holiday
Buy flowers or a plant

ErrolTheDragon · 30/04/2024 16:06

Buy plants, go to nice gardens or countryside.

VanLife33 · 30/04/2024 16:08

Have a cup of tea, it's a hug on the inside 🤗 ☕

Also reading a favourite book is good for a bit of escapism

Watching a nostalgic film or series

Sitting in the garden and listening to the birds..

All with that cup of tea of course !

CarInsurance · 30/04/2024 16:09

Depends on the circumstances and cash flow. I'd love a weekend away or an expensive facial type treatment (I never want to spend my own money on facials for some reason but would love a gift of a decent one).

Daily stuff I put on loud music in the car, take the dog out, listen to a podcast or settle down to a series with snacks.

Desecratedcoconut · 30/04/2024 16:09

A book or something for the house, like a cushion or a throw. I think, give the sheer number of small kitchen appliances that I have now, it might be hard to argue that this isn't also a thing.

Greywitch2 · 30/04/2024 16:09

A quarter of sweets and a childhood favourite book. Something that will really take me back to being 9 with no worries.

The Folk of the Faraway Tree
Jill had Two Ponies
Ballet Shoes

Nice easy comfort reading with a bag of something like Sherbert Pips or Sweet Peanuts.

Hyperion100 · 30/04/2024 16:10

Get off devices
Get outside in to "nature" - walk, run, cycle, sit, whatever
Go to the gym
Go to the garden centre
Buy yourself some delicious food

Buying "stuff" will only make you feel good for 5 mins (except plants)

froggirl · 30/04/2024 16:13

I try to limit material things, but sometimes buying myself new clothes, a book, or items related to my hobby can cheer me up.

Otherwise I will go to a coffee shop for a hot drink, maybe a snack, and read/ write/ decompress a while.

Video games can be good if I'm not up to leaving the house and want something fairly mindless and distracting.

Exercise and fresh air are good if I feel up to it, but that's quite a 'high level' one for me. I have to be feeling a certain level of OK to do them.

Bringbackspring · 30/04/2024 16:19

I was thinking about this today as the last few times I've had a week day off I've ended up doing big lists of errands, and while it's nice to get things done, today I was pondering having a totally self-involved day off next time it comes around.

I was thinking maybe a really nice proper lunch out alone, with a book to read and just really take my time with it. Looking at lots of plants and flowers is also really relaxing, so either garden centre (but I'd be tempted to spend too much) or visit the local botanical garden. Basically something that involves very little advance planning, very little driving, and where I couldn't possibly pair it up with running an errand on the way there or way back home!

If it all gets a bit much, I give in to my one true vice - lots of biscuits. Dunked in tea of course!
