Sometimes aging sucks! My teeth have noticeably shifted

One of my teeth feels weird and I have just had a look and my front bottom teeth are really higgledy piggledy. One is really leaning back and one has twisted round. Google tells me this is age. What next?! (I’m 48)

I'd be devastated if that happened after all the orthodontic work I went through as a teen.
Will you have it fixed?

Batlady78 · 29/04/2024 22:30

Omg this has happened to me but because of an anti-snoring mouth thingy I wear every night. I was scared to touch my teeth the first time I noticed it in case they were loose! Combination and mouthpiece and age = gappy!

Whatmorecantherebe · 29/04/2024 22:35

I can’t afford to have any dentist work done. I recently loosened a crown biting into a really tough baguette. I’m avoiding biting things!

I wear my retainer when I notice mine moving, I wonder if there are DIY retainers or similar to gently nudge them back, not that invisiglin because that’s expense but similar?

Whatmorecantherebe · 29/04/2024 22:40

I’d be too worried about loosening them to try straighten them myself. I just accept I’m probably going to have dreadful looking teeth at some point. I broke a back tooth a while ago and have just left it because it isn’t visible.

At 73, this is a distant memory for me. My teeth started to go their own way (mainly out of my jaw) in my later 40's.

In this upside down country, the "good" side for me, is that the rest of my teeth (bar the three that linger on for no discernable reason) have fallen out with no pain to me. Which is just as well as my daughter and her partner cannot get a NHS dentist for love nor money.

before you picture me as some kind of toothless hag, I have a very good pair of dentures. Though I am something of a hag 😁. Toothy smile deliberate.

I’d want to be having an X-ray OP. To me this sounds like you have bone loss possibly caused by periodontal disease. You must go to the dentist.

Deepdivesueandyou · 29/04/2024 22:55

My front tooth has moved, I know I have gum disease.
I can't go to the dentist- just typing this makes me sick with fear.
I know I have to do something but I'm paralysised by fear.
I'm religiously flossing and brushing and avoiding hard food.
It makes me feel so scared, I want to hide.

Don't be like me OP - go get it seen too.

hellololabells2019 · 29/04/2024 22:56

This has happened to me. Had an X-ray, no bone disease. The dentist said it just happens sometimes

Whatmorecantherebe · 29/04/2024 23:02

I dread loosing my teeth but not much I can do. Too late to try get dental insurance with so much work needed already.

So many of my friends in 40s are surprised to find teeth suddenly going higgledy. It seems to be a fairly "normal" part of ageing that nobody warned us about. Ha! And lots of my friends have lately been going down the Invisalign route. The results are really rejuvenating. I did talk to my dentist about this but too expensive for me at the moment.

MrMrsMoon · 30/04/2024 09:21

I'm a bit older and my previously straightened teeth have moved too. I'm lucky enough to afford to pay insurance for standard dental care, but invisalign or similar are beyond me as well 😔

This.

Declining oestrogen levels in your 40s can really affect bone density. It needs checking.
