Any consequences of having just over a year between car services?

Hi, I know this probably sounds like I'm overthinking but - I get my car MOT'd and serviced every year (together) - the MOT anniversary is 'preserved' (say it's June 15th) if you do it in the month leading up to the anniversary date but the car's computer wants me to do a service by exactly one year after the last one.

So e.g. if last year's MOT and service was 1 June, MOT date is still June 15th but service anniversary keeps creeping back.

I know servicing is entirely optional but obviously it's stored on the car's computer and keeps saying 'Service due in X days'. I can't get a slot at the garage to do both until about 1 week after the service anniversary from last year, so it'll be about a year and a week between services.

1 - does this matter if I come to sell the car - full service history etc?
2 - I have a warranty that's based on me getting the car serviced annually, would this be invalidated if it's just over a year?

Any other consequences I haven't thought of?

I've had the car about 8 years now and this hasn't really come up before as I've always gotten them a bit in advance but clearly the service 'date' is only ever going to go further backwards!

For the previous posters saying warranties aren't worth it, I work at a dealers who fund our own warranty 'pot'. We have just paid over £15,000 and wiped that fund out completely having to put a brand new engine in a Defender that's less than 4 years old with full Land Rover service history. So yeah, that customer is glad they had a warranty!! Most warranties have an individual claim limit (which is what I would check before purchasing) but usually the overall claim limit is up to the value of the car. As with anything there are some good companies about and sone atrocious ones.

Yeah but you probably have to do that because it's a JLR dealership and they all break 😂

No we are a small family business selling 40 cars a month. We only sell JLR if there's enough profit - it's all about risk versus reward. It's really hurt our business but that's the risk you take when you retail cars. It's just bad luck. I would never own a JLR myself 😂

Yeah, it’s a wounder! I’ve come across small traders before who say under no circumstances will they retail a JLR product.

We also usually don't retail them as it's not worth the risk. But this was a 3.5 year old vehicle, with 35,000 miles on it and full service history with LR, and it wasn't one of the 'known' risky engines. We would normally trade them but circumstances meant the trade price we paid dropped suddenly over a few weeks so we would've lost a lot of money on a trade sale.........significantly less than the cost of an engine of course in hindsight! Lesson learnt.

So anyway Op apologies for the derail. I think it's great you are so thorough in looking after your very expensive asset, it amazes me every day how many people spend so much money on a car and then just run it into the ground. It also amazes me the amount of people who don't maintain cars at all and they're running kids around all day without a thought for things like tires and brakes, and the safety of their children in these cara that aren't looked after.

I feel your pain!

Once your car is outside warranty type conditions I suggest you find yourself an independent garage you can rely on. (not easy!) Many brand-linked dealerships are utterly useless at service work anyway. They will also scam you for completely unnecessary work if you keep coming back.

Harsh? Not in my many many years of driving experience…

You can clear the annoying service messages (or lights) quite easily. Google the following phrases, tweaking the words if necessary. Many people have helpfully put the information online.

Reset service light VW Tiguan
Resetting service indicator VW Tiguan
Resetting service message VW Tiguan

It’s usually as easy as pressing and holding a button while turning the ignition on/off.

Girl Power!

That's a little heartbreaking! Sorry for you!

Don't be worried PP just don't buy a Jag or Land Rover, even though bizarrely I loves the I pace I drove for a few weeks!

There are loads of good car retails and brands about. Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Kia.

And I second the PP who said don't use main dealers for servicing, find a good local garage who come recommended. It's a myth you have to service at a dealer for the manufacturers warranty, they just have to be VAT registered.

PopandFizz · 03/05/2024 00:09

Sorry to say you're receiving some bad advice here - check with your warranty provider!!

It doesn't matter in terms of selling the car if there's a bit of leeway but you can guarantee if your warranty needs paying out and your book says it has gone over a year a lot of providers will fight you for it.

Ring where you have your warranty and check for peace of mind. You don't want to find out in 6 months your warranty was invalidated.
