A meal you still think about...

I had the most wonderful lamb madras years ago. The sauce was just perfect and so creamy. The lamb was scrumptious and sadly I had had too many wines to enjoy it properly. I think about this curry just to tease myself every time I'm hungry 😩

5 years ago, my lovely neighbour from Pakistan made me a gorgeous curry the night I got home from the hospital after I had my first baby. The whole week she prepared the most delicious meals and left them on my door step at dinner time. I moved around a year later and we still send her a gift every year for Eid. She was a wonderful woman. I just had my second baby a few weeks ago and I still think about her wonderful cooking even now. I often wonder if she realises the impact she had on me.

That's such a thoughtful gesture.

Driving through France with my Dad and brother when I was a youngster, probably about 10. We'd gone for miles through pretty unpopulated countryside and were getting very hungry! Finally we found a cafe in a small village and sat outside. My Dad ordered me a ham baguette and an orangina (this is in the days when orangina was lovely and not mucked about with with artificial sweeteners) and I swear that was the best sandwich I've ever had in all my 60 years. The bread had that fantastic crunch, she was generous with the unsalted butter, but the ham was nice and salty and very thickly sliced off the bone. I think about that sandwich surprisingly often and never had anything like it, even though I've been to France many times over the years.

Greece when I was a teenager in a taverna...there was a sort of bbq/buffet night. I had sausages and a jacket potato... nothing fancy but it tasted soooo good!

The ivy...the roast chicken with foie gras. I'd never tried it before. Absolutely sublime.

I also remember being in Spain...we had a tour of some sort of farm and afterwards they served us food and drink. They had some bread and they rubbed it with a clove of garlic and half a tomato...then drizzled it with olive oil. It tasted amazing

T-bone steak with canary sauce and potatoes with a jug of sangria in a restaurant in tenerife - used to go there yearly when teen- early 20s. Went this year (mid thirties) and closed down. I was devastated - thought about that meal on a very regular basis for years. Was delicious!

Salted caramel profiteroles in Miller and Carter. They were amazing!

I dream about canarian potatoes and green mojo regularly. I’m not really a fan of potatoes normally.
we’re off to the ‘rife in a few weeks and it’s what I’m looking forward to the most

At the end of a year’s post-grad diploma back in 2001 our group had a day out to celebrate.

We got a little boat out to one of the follies off the coast of Portsmouth which was then a restaurant. It was such a simple meal but honestly one of the best I’ve ever eaten.

Warm roast chicken with oven baked potatoes and salad

Lemon meringue pie - made with a thick buttery biscuit crumb base instead of pastry - fresh raspberries and cream.

Washed down by a gorgeous, ice cold white wine, in lovely June sunshine with interesting people.

A meal in a hotel in the Lake District inn1990!
It was delicious.

A pizza in an airport in Mexico. I actually brought the last slice all the way home with me because I couldn't bear to leave it

Seafood pasta at The Wensleydale Heifer in 1992. It was sublime.

All the food at the Wensleydale Heifer is sublime, over 20 years later. Sadly I don't think we'll be going back anytime soon, not until DD is older!

My friend and I had spent all day walking round New York and we were so exhausted we went to the nearest place to our hotel that was well rated on TripAdvisor without checking what it was.

It turned out to be half restaurant, half Mexican gay bar. They had no tables but said if we didn't mind sitting at the bar we could eat there.

I had a fillet of sea bass with avocado salsa and garlic mashed potatoes and I almost cried when it was finished.

murasaki · 28/04/2024 13:07

Unethical, but the tastiest thing i ever had.

About 20 years ago at the Anchor and Hope gastropub in Waterloo.

A bowl of perfectly seasoned potato soup with a slab of fois gras on top, melting unctuously into the soup.

31st October 2016, I was dressed as ginger spice, it was very cold and in the early hours of the morning. I was very drunk and there was a burger van down a suspicious looking alleyway. I had three cheese burgers total. There was probably nothing special about them at all but at the time they were so delicious. I was violently sick the next day. I’ve been back to where the van supposedly was and I’ve never seen it again, whenever I go home and go on a night out I look for it but I can’t find it. If I had them again I probably would think they were shit, but those burgers live rent free in my head and probably will be one of my deathbed thoughts.

A tasting menu at The Balmoral Hotel in Edinburgh.

I love this!

My in laws took us to La Colombe D’Or in Saint Paul de Vence the day after we got engaged to say congratulations. Everything about it was the most beautiful meal I’d ever had. If you ever get a chance to go DO IT!!!
I can’t actually remember my main, but to start I had the special of figs and cured French ham with champagne. It was so simple but utterly perfect and the figs were like jam. I think of it at least a few times a week, it was the taste of that summer and being newly in love 🥰.
In fact I was just a bit shitty with DH and just thinking about that meal has made me want to go and apologise 🤣.

I rarely eat meat, and particularly tend to avoid pork but I had a really simple but giant pork chop in Greece two years ago and I still think of it wistfully today.

I even kept a photo of it which I occasionally look at like a long lost love. 😳😂

I love this. I’d rather remember my best meals than one or two of my former lovers….

spottyhotdog · 28/04/2024 14:37

A cajun chicken pasta dish at a nearby pub. It was absolutely delicious! Everytime I went for a meal there, that's what I would order. They've since changed the menu and it has disappeared, probably never to be seen again :(

Mitsky · 28/04/2024 14:38

Truffle squid ink gnocchi in Croatia, we went back two nights later and had the exact same thing again because it was so outrageous. I’d never repeat a meal on holiday normally.

The tasting session for our wedding food picking

Tacos in New York, which was more of the company and came at the end of a truly lovely holiday.

LauderSyme · 28/04/2024 14:39

The most scrumptious lamb chops, marinated and basted and cooked over a charcoal grill in a restaurant in Athens.

A delectable smoked haddock soufflé topped with caviar, served by a wealthy relative as a starter on Christmas day.

A beautiful celebration meal at a French bistro near Kew Gardens. I had French onion soup to start with and Cassoulet for my main and was too full for pudding. The soup was outstanding.

CombatBarbie · 28/04/2024 14:40

A pudding we used to get at primary, I'm sure it was called eves pudding. A sponge with a sticky topping.... With custard

I’ve just looked them up as I’m going to be up that way this summer (well Harrogate but close enough!)

Bloody hell that looks amazing. I can’t remember the last time I found a place where I would want to try everything on the menu!

Do it! You won't regret it! If you can push to an overnight, the breakfasts are amazing too 😋

The first time I ever had escargot at this tiny rustic restaurant at the old port in Marseille. I started off feeling slightly queasy and apprehensive. Then that changed to trying to dig out the shells as quickly as I could to get another delicious garlicky mouthful.

I've had escargot many times since, but I've never had any as beautifully made as that. They were melting in my mouth. One of the most satisfying things I've ever eaten.

GigiAnnna · 28/04/2024 14:45

Lasagne with a jacket potato at the hotel on a school holiday as a kid. I'm not usually a lover of lasagne but it was so cheesy, crisp and delicious and not sloppy at all. I've never had one like it since.
