Talcum powder!

Anyone notice how hard it is (and very expensive), to find normal talcum powder?

Lots of baby powder, but that’s not talcum powder, just a version of corn starch instead.

Has something happened and I’ve missed the news on this?

Although people might think baby powder is “rank” it’s only a good thing that talc has been removed from baby products.
For babies in particular; talc in the air is harmful to their lungs - babies have developed respiratory distress and died in the past from inhalation.

The few talcum powders which remain on the market containing talc should be kept well away from children.

The “dust” from using talc settles everywhere which shows how much floats intro the air unnoticed.

I'm glad talc has been removed from baby powder. I'm smothering myself in baby powder every day so I can get dressed. I've had shoulder surgery and putting clothes on one handed after a shower is impossible without it. eg I have to put my bra on around my waist, doing it up at the front. Then twist is around my body into the correct position, put my arms through the straps and wiggle it up into position. Nigh on impossible when you have that slighly damp skin that persists even after drying yourself.

Ah that sounds tough @MrTiddlesTheCat ! Using baby powder is inspired! Get well soon x

My brother in his late 70s broke his shoulder and had to have an operation. He was shown by the nurse to blowdry his body with the hairdryer. All recovered now, but still uses hairdryer after shower.

Drove through France on return from Northern Italy recently, and bought a big tub of Italian talcumpowder, smelling of lavender, with a big puff applier. Wish I had bought several refills now.

The key is to be careful when you apply not to inhale- easy enough.

I've smothered myself in talc every day since I discovered using my mum's expensive Chanel body powder could help me with excess sweating during puberty. My mum was not happy and bought me Avon and Yardley talcs. It's probably cost me more over my lifetime than if I had a weekend habit of shoving that other white powder up my nose.

I was told about the link to ovarian cancer 40-odd years ago so started buying cornstarch body powders home from annual trips to visit relatives in America.

I still use talc in my armpits and under my heavy breasts, though. I started stocking up a few years ago when I realised that Johnson's had pulled baby talc from the shelves and replaced with cornstarch.

I love how fresh and dry powder makes me feel after a shower. Perfumed talcs have been an indulgence for me, baby talc a necessity as far as I'm concerned, and cornstarch powder a poor third but anything's better than nothing.

I know I should probably be using just cornstarch as it's the mesothelioma risk as well as the ovarian cancer risk (not that I use talc between my legs, only cornstarch), but I'm addicted to that clean, dry feeling that lasts.

Talc is safe.

Published scientific literature going back to the 1960s has suggested a possible association between the use of powders containing talc in the genital area and the incidence of ovarian cancer. However, these studies have not conclusively demonstrated such a link, or if such a link existed, what risk factors might be involved. More research is needed to confirm if there is a link or not. In addition, questions about the potential contamination of talc with asbestos have been raised since the 1970s.

Can get lots of talc. Most people opt for corn based product these days which is finer. Great for hot weather, chub rub shorts are just way too hot under a dress when it's hot.

When we were clearing my mums house two years ago we found boxes filled with talc. I mean the old fashioned metal tins of talc along with the “posh’ powder puff ones. There was so much of it including Avon Faraway, M&S Magnolia unopened and Arden Red Door. We chucked it most of it but I still have a few I kept for memories. I still use talc if we go to the beach, normally Yardley Rose as it’s great for getting sand off feet.

Newsenmum · 12/10/2024 23:09

What’s it even for? Is it worth putting on?

paradisecityx · 12/10/2024 23:11

I couldn't be without my baby powder 😂 after every bath or shower it goes under the tiddies. Feels lovely.

PickAChew · 12/10/2024 23:15

I have a photo of me as a baby in 1970, figuring out the cap on a tin of talc and just about to tip it everywhere!

Mamabearsmile · 12/10/2024 23:54

Nooooo...! Corn based.

Mamabearsmile · 13/10/2024 00:26

See above.

I'd have paid you handsomely for that lot.

My sister looked on ebay after we’d binned it out of interest and we could have cried. We never even thought to check.
