Do you think this is rude

Queuing today in Aldi and started to unload my shopping. About 3/4 of my shopping in on the belt so quite a lot in the trolley and a bloke walks up, places his next customer sign behind my shopping and starts unloading his shopping.
I said can you move your shopping back so I can finish. He glared at me and ignored me.
Luckily lovely check out assistant who helped me get the rest of my shopping through but really who does that? And then glares at you and ignores you when you ask them to move their shopping back
I know it's not a big thing but it pissed me off.

Yes of course it is

chaticat · 27/04/2024 20:23

Why do you think it might not be rude?

SevenSeasOfRhye · 27/04/2024 20:24

Yes - you should wait until the last person has emptied their trolley before you unload.

determinedtomakethiswork · 27/04/2024 20:24

I agree with you, it's amazing when you get grown people who don't seem to know how to cope at a checkout.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/04/2024 20:29

If he didn't blow a raspberry, then not rude.

According to Debretts
(it's under the Chuckle Brothers in the index).

DrJonesIpresume · 27/04/2024 20:43

He was beyond rude.

I would have cheerfully pushed it all backwards up the conveyor and carried on loading mine. Or possibly shoved the trolley firmly backwards into his meat & two veg.

frozendaisy · 27/04/2024 20:48

He's probably pissed off he hasn't got some woman to do his grocery shopping for him because I mean who could resist such an specimen of male. And he clearly far more important than a mere female.

I would have taken as long as I could at the checkout.

atbreakingpointwork · 27/04/2024 22:01

Happened to me before. I had to pick up the separator and push all their stuff back.
Then I realised I need to stand at the end of the belt when unloading to stop this happening again.

Rosebel · 28/04/2024 09:35

Yeah I know it's rude, it just pissed me off yesterday and wanted to rant. I have managed to get over it now 😂
But I bet he wouldn't have done it if my husband had been there.

It's really annoying- the new thing in shopping culture, to move people on as quickly as possible. I noticed at my local Lidl, once everything is totalled the till starts beeping. There are shelves opposite the tills and sometimes (couples) move everything to the shelves and start packing so the next person can be served. When I shop (along) it starts beeping while I pack and everyone stares at me as if I should move everything to the shelves and then pay and pack. I always feel like stating "wouldn't that be stupid to make it twice as long and twice as much work to load everything just to save two minutes when I don't have a second person with me to pack the shopping up while I pay"...

WhamBamThankU · 28/04/2024 09:40

I always put my trolley at the end of the till blocking anyone else from the belt.

skilpadde · 28/04/2024 09:47

It was rude, but may not have been deliberately so. A lot of people aren't very observant, and he probably didn't look at your trolley. If you were standing halfway along the conveyor belt, that could be taken as code for you having finished unloading your trolley. It's best to stay at the end of the conveyor belt, unloading as gaps appear on the belt, and only shuffling toward the till once you've finished unloading.

invisibleoldwoman · 28/04/2024 09:55

I sometimes have shopping that needs to be separated into two sections for payment from different accounts. One time I had a few items in the second section and at the end of the first section I realised that the cashier had included the second section items. An elderly man behind me had obviously decided they could all be paid together and removed the separator. I asked the cashier (who wisely remained silent but was happy to accommodate me, I am sure it wasn't her mistake) to remove the items from the bill, then I paid then I paid for the remaining items, all the while keeping up a commentary about how did the separator get moved etc. It took ages. Far longer than just paying separately in the first place would have done. It was very satisfying.

LakeTiticaca · 28/04/2024 09:57

That depends upon if you started loading your trolley from the end of the belt or the middle. This has happened to me in the past whereby there is a trolley half way along the belt with a big gap which makes it seem that the customer in front has finished unloading.
Because the customer is behind the trolley it's not always obvious that the trolley isnt empty. So I have assumed that the customer has fully unloaded and start loading my shopping. Then next thing is the customer turns round and shoots a filthy look and starts muttering snidely. So the best way to avoid this is to start loading from the very end and load more as the belt moves.
I avoid this now by only shopping in outlets that have scan and shop, its far quicker and a lot less aggravation

I know it's not a big thing
you got that right

The thing you describe other people doing is the 'correct' thing to do in Lidl, though it may not be so adhered to in some stores these days.

When Lidl stores first appeared here, there used to be posters/signs telling you to pack your bags at the separate counters, and not at the till. The assistant whips through the scanning, leaving you only enough time to chuck the items in your trolley and after paying, you move away from the till to pack your bag. It's all part of the 'no frills' but cheaper shopping experience at Lidl.

If other customers are glaring at you, it's because they're more aware of Lidl norms than you are.

Stressybetty · 28/04/2024 10:39

Lidl shopper here, I tend to stand at the other end of the trolley and load the belt from there. That way I'm facing the person behind and they can see what's left in the trolley. Packing everything goes straight back in the trolley so no delays or need for the shelf and I pack into big plastic tubs in the car boot, cold things in one tub, dry in another so it's easier to put away at home

Rosebel · 28/04/2024 11:30

Well he might not have noticed but I did ask him if he could move his things back (I was polite) and I was the one who got the filthy look.

I hate all the palaver and the loading and unloading of shopping, so that’s why I get mine delivered now. I have a £60 a year delivery pass from Sainsbury’s and all my deliveries are free (as long as I spend £40, which isn’t a problem). Saves me so much time, petrol and annoyance.
