Tax code was wrong - do you have to apply for the refund or will it come automatically?

As the title, my daughter found out she was paying emergency tax for a number of months last year. She’s had her P60 for the past year now but no refund in April’s pay.

Will this get automatically refunded or does she need to call HMRC? Advice gratefully received as I’ve never come across this before.

She will need to request a refund as the cut off is 5 April. It would eventually be refunded, but she can try to speed things up.

It will get automatically refunded, but could be two or three months or longer, mine is generally out by a small amount as I have a couple of pensions so not worth me chasing and generally I get refunded about June but this sounds like quite a bit so she will probably want to chase it up, not sure if you can request it online but she could give them a ring

Also wondering for my son who has been overpaying for 2 years due to his employer making a mistake. He’s now on the correct tax code but potentially due over £1k in overpaid tax. Will it be paid back through his pay or via a cheque?
