How would you answer this interview Q?

"What kind of management style/manager do you need in order to do well in this role?"

I was asked this a few weeks ago and never thought about it before so fluffed the answer. I wasn't right for the job so I wouldn't have accepted the job anyway but I have kept returning to this question in my mind and still not sure I'd answer it well! Anyway, curious what others would say?

Someone laissez-faire but at the same time supportive.

Someone who will give me short deadlines and then leave me to do the task.

I would answer honestly (but obviously professionally!)

When I've been asked this in the past I've answers that I need a manager who gives me a clear strategy for the organisation/division/whatever and lets me get on with me job - who's available to bounce ideas around and check in but otherwise let's me do my thing. I also say I value honest feedback and an open culture where we can share what's working well/what we want to tweak etc.

Maybe I'd also drop in something that's highlighting something I'm good at that's relevant, so I might say I work really well to deadlines or something so find that helpful from a manager

Are they asking you to see if you'd fit in with the manager?

I would talk about values based leadership, which of my values align with the organisation, how transparency around values builds trust and confidence in your decision making etc and give examples of when this style has been successful. I'd also comment that it's not a style I overtly choose as a tactic or technique it's who I am and that makes me authentic as a leader

It's a bit ambiguous - are you applying for a manager role and talking about you, or are they talking about the management style you need from your manager?

I’ve sort of been asked this before, but by a new incoming line manager who asked how I liked to be managed.
I’d say: I’d like the space and autonomy to get the task done, but that I appreciate regular check-ins (eg weekly) so that I can raise any issues I’m struggling with, and for those problems to become joint problems which we can brainstorm solutions for together.
Oh and don’t tell me to go home at the end of the day when there’s masses to do which can’t wait for tomorrow: just let me get it done, we both know nobody else is going to do it!!

I love a manager who gives really clear instructions on what they want then leaves you to get on and do it. I hate people who are vague and then seem surprised you didn't read their minds on what they were expecting, or who you have to keep asking for essential info that should have been given at the start, as it feels like pestering. I've had both types and the managers who are clear and thorough at briefing, then trust you to get on with it, are the best.
