How can I clean this rug??

Newbie1011 · 26/04/2024 16:36

Bought this new rug recently and obviously, the cat immediately weed on it 🙄
Being quoted between £150 and £220 plus VaT to have it professionally cleaned 😱 the rug itself was only £600 so this seems like madness to me! However, it really smells and I need to sort something quick! Can anyone advise me on how to clean it myself or recommend a cheaper cleaning service?! I am based in north London

Spot clean the affected area.

Either put bicarbonate of soda on the affected area (fairly thick layer, leave it then brush it off, then vacuum)

or use a white vinegar spray.

You can use a pet urine odour spray if you have it.

Don't wash the whole rug.

PaminaMozart · 26/04/2024 16:39

Try sodium bicarbonate?

I have read that,

We recommend a mixture of 2 cups of white vinegar, 2 cups warm water, and four tablespoons of baking soda in a spray bottle. Another effective recipe is 1 litre 3% hydrogen peroxide, ¼ cup baking soda and 1 tsp dish soap. Spray the affected area, let it dry, and then clean with soap and water, and spray it again.

I would start with the vinegar/baking soda mixture and try it underneath...and then you're going have to test it with your 👃

If the cat has weed on it soon after getting without any explanation (ie ill, scared to go out), I wouldn't bother cleaning - cat obviously thinks it's a nice area to use and will return.

passtheajax · 26/04/2024 18:10

You might have to use it as a wall hanging if the cat does it again.

TeaAndStrumpets · 26/04/2024 18:23

That is a lovely rug.

Adult DD has a very elderly greyhound with a delicate tummy.. after a few rug disasters she has bought a rug cleaning machine. It's a Bissell SpotClean Pet Pro and she says it's fantastic. Less than £200 from Amazon, and has been used many times. It's not huge but she can use it for general cleaning of rugs, upholstery etc. It has certainly been a good investment.

Newbie1011 · 27/04/2024 11:24

Thanks so much for all the tips. @TeaAndStrumpets ill definitely look into this as I am worried that, as @Toomuch44 says, the cat will be a repeat offender. Honestly so cross with her 😂 why oh why did it have to be my lovely new rug!!

Because it was there, it was new, hard to clean, from an animal and expensive, and because it could.

Newbie1011 · 27/04/2024 15:43

@HoldingOnForAHeron are cats less likely to wee on a synthetic rug? Serious question! I’be tried to clean it today and it still smells. I think I might just have to get rid of it 😭

HoldingOnForAHeron · 27/04/2024 15:59

I'd not get rid of it. Wait for a dry day that isn't too sunny and spray it with the Dr Beckmann, then hang it on the washing line.
Some of the smell will be you being aware of it IYKWIM.
I'd spray it then with EDT or something citrus-scented.

Don't get a jute rug - it will get used as a scratching post.

My leather pouffe was urinated on.

AuntieMaggie · 27/04/2024 16:05

You can get a Vax carpet cleaner for about £100 - might be worth investing if the cats likely to do it again!

Hi everyone!

I could use some advice on cleaning a rug that’s seen better days. It has a few stains and has picked up quite a bit of dust over time. What are some effective methods or products you recommend for deep cleaning rugs at home? Also, is it better to hire professional help for delicate fabrics?

Any tips from fellow homeowners or cleaning experts would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!
