Question about 3/4 year olds and toilet

My son is 3, will be 4 in July and starts reception in Sept. He's obviously been potty trained a while, since he was 2.5, but I have a few questions about next steps at this age (first time mum to one with no experience of early years).

  1. Son takes himself to the bathroom no problem, and asks for privacy when doing a number 2. He is capable of climbing up onto the loo using a foot-step and a child seat, but still normally prefers to use his potty at home. At his Granny's house recently there was no potty and I noticed he just took himself to the loo with no step or seat.

Do the question is do we just throw the potty away now? Or continue to let him use it? What she should this be gone? Looking ahead to school I guess....

  1. He still calls me in to wipe his bum after a number 2, and when I said he'd need to learn ready for school he questioned why (!) I said teachers aren't paid enough to wipe your bottom (stupid comment I know) and he said but my carers at nursery do! I obviously clarified that he'd be expected to manage on his own as teachers have lessons to teach. Any tips about teaching a reluctant bum wiper?

Thank you

Get rid of the potty so the toilet is the norm. At school they'll be child size so no step needed. With wiping encourage him to give a go but then do a check wipe when he thinks he's done and you'll slowly find you don't need to.

I’d caution against getting rid of the potty too soon but been trained for over a year and nearly 4 is well past time. Big boys use the toilet, the potty is for toddlers who are learning and can’t hold it. If he’s really, really reluctant then the compromise might be that it lives in the bathroom next to the toilet and hopefully he’ll realise quickly it’s more comfortable at his size to just use the loo. As for wiping, he does it first then you check. Get nursery on board with this too so he always has to attempt it himself first, in fact I’m surprised they’re not doing that already, it’s what ours did from when DS first trained even though he was 2 years off starting school.
