Hi. I'm going to Liverpool next week(from Ireland). Staying in the city centre. Any recommendations for food and entertaining a 12yr old boy. We have a tour of Anfield book.

What days? I ask because the museums are mostly closed on Mondays.

Bold St Coffee and Greek Taverna (also on Bold St) are excellent.

We will be there Sunday to Thursday.
Anfield booked for Monday.

Also quick question regarding sterling. I got some sterling from the last time I was in the UK pre covid and it has the queen's head on it. Can I still use this?

Albert Dock area is great for sightseeing - Museum of Liverpool, Maritime Museum with the International Slavery Museum inside the same building, the docks are nice to walk around and have a nosy, lots of little random shops and places to eat etc, the ferris wheel thing is at one end too.

Another good central area for sightseeing is St George's Plateau area - Central Library, World Museum, Walker Art Gallery, St John's Gardens if it's dry.

Bold Street is a great place for eating out, loads of choice.

Hope Street - two cathedrals, one at each end and each worthy of your time regardless of religious leanings or none. Vastly different in architecture and atmosphere. Also the Everyman Theatre on the same street. See if there’s a play you might book tickets for. Ferocious audience, wonderful auditorium, unlike anywhere else. Lots of good places to eat dotted along the street.

The Playhouse theatre - more mainstream / popular.

The Tung Auditorium in the university area - exceptional new music venue.

Sefton Park Palmhouse, if it’s open. Great relief on a cold wet day.

Tate Liverpool gallery at Albert Dock.

Finally and unmissably:

The ‘Another Place’ sculptures on Crosby Beach. Amazingly empty stretch of beach with iron figures looking out to sea. Truly unforgettable and very popular with children as well as adults.

I made a similar thread last year and got some fantastic suggestions. I don't know how to find it now, though, to link.

I'm going again in a few weeks to see all the places I missed out last year. I have booked a tour of the tunnels via the Friends website and can't wait!

Ferry across the Mersey and the albert dock to fill a day, Gravity Max and junkyard golf in L1 are great and Bold Street or Duke Street food market for food

Also 2 Cathedrals - start at one and walk to the other. Have a look round the cemetery at the back of the Anglican cathedral, sounds a bit creepy but worth a walk round.

Before you go, check if the museums are open. They have been involved in strike action lately and not sure if it's stopped yet. Try gravity max in Liverpool one, got go karting,, bowling, crazy golf, arcades etc. Also Arcains which is a massive retro arcade based in the old Cains brewery building just on the dock road. My sons favourite place and there is also a street food market next door

I second Arcains! DS (12) loved it although after couple of hours the noise drove me mad. Anfield tour is good so he should enjoy that, as is a visit to Jurgen’s Bierhaus if he’s interested in Liverpool FC.

The interactive tour of the Liver Building was good too! Fantastic views from up there.

…also, the Museum of Liverpool has a floor that is dedicated to culture- music, film, tv and sports. There is a film that shows history of Liverpool FC and Everton that’s really interesting.

Gravity max in Liverpool one ( indoor karting and VR sets) or the indoor fairground at the Albert Dock.

My kids loved Quirky Quarter on Duke Street a couple of years ago, escape room type puzzles, optical illusions and fun room sets to take photos in.

Tate gallery is currently closed for redevelopment. They have some space at the RIBA building nearby but not the usual galleries.
