New kettle - can someone reassure me the plastic smell as it boils is normal?

New kettle as old one's spout was dead and leaking. Old one had metal inside. New one is plastic with metal base. First boil smells like car tyres being burnt. Kettle is a Salter so well known brand, assume has passed checks (they do have to be EU compliant still?) but I am struggling to want to drink tea made in a steam cloud of plastic smells.

Hoping someone on here can reassure me scientifically that this kettle isn't about to leach poisons into my tea or, better as I fear I have the fear, recommend a decent black kettle that doesn't make my house smell of plastic when boiled?

I find you have to boil them a few times using fresh water to get rid of that horrible smell.

I decided to do that before trying the tea...am on the 3rd full boil now, although that's probably heating the plastic even more.

Not sure if I've just gone nose blind though!

Our photocopier has a very plasticky smell. You only need to do a couple of copies and there is that smell.

I am a bit suspicious of hot plastic so always buy stainless steel ones for that reason. I've no idea if my concerns are warranted or not though.

Thank you @Murpe - funnily enough that was one I was looking at (not many options in black) but went for a more expensive one because it looked less plasticy! The irony!

I bought this one recently as its stainless steel.
On its instructions it does say to boil and discard a kettle of water several times before use

I'm sure I read about kettles from China and other plastics being heated up leaching into drinks (the water bottles being left in hot cars was news at the time too). I remember there was a poster on here who tested foodstuffs and posted about the futility of washing fruits such as grapes to get chemical sprays off... I think we all just assume someone is out there testing kettles and other plastic appliances for carcinogens as part of health and safety but now and then I want some reassurance!

I had a stainkess steel Russel Hobbs kettle that did this, and i found (via the Internet) that there was a red plastic 'level gauage' inside the kettle and it was suggested to remove it, which i did and the smell / taste went away.

loudbatperson · 24/04/2024 09:35

I think k the instructions normally advise boiling and rinsing 2/3 times before using to get rid of any residues from the manufacturing process.

It will fade over time.

PokemonandMissingSocks · 29/04/2024 17:36

I think some TEABAGS are themselves sealed with plastic So I think you ingest plastic that way anyway.

DrJonesIpresume · 29/04/2024 17:39

Yes, as others say you need to boil it several times before you use it for drinks. I'm not sure stainless steel kettles are any better, you get a metallic tinge from them.

Hakeje · 29/04/2024 17:47

I would just keep boiling it and tipping the water out until it diminishes.

RespiceFinemKarma · 29/04/2024 19:38

Thanks all - after about 4 boils the smell diminished. Am using it now without issue. Thanks for the reassurance.
