Car Insurance how to get it right down?

DS has 3 points on licence he is the 2nd named person on my DH car - quoting 3k to insure! The cars only worth £1k!!!!

Any ideas on how to reduce

Ive just added me on as a 3rd person and it's brought it right down by £1k so now just over 2k

The insurance company needs to cover more than the value of the car. So if any driver has points on their license the premium's going to have to cover the potential loss that could becaused by careless drivers.

If you've done all the comparisons and added all the named drivers that could potentially drive the car then you'll have to settle. Or tell your son to get his own insurance sorted and leave him off your policy.

I always alter my profession to get the quotes down. Obviously not a lie but you can say ‘retail worker’ as opposed to ‘shop assistant’ or ‘customer service’ instead of ‘call centre staff.’ Little things like that make a difference I have found.

You aren't helping yourselves by having him as a named driver on your policy as he won't be building up no claims bonus of his own.

You would probably be better off buying the cheapest small banger you can find and insuring him 3rd party only. Even if he never drives the car he will build his own no claims.

I did this for my niece a few years ago when she was 17, and at that time a small Vauxhall Corsa (1 litre) was the cheapest to insure.

Trouble is, second hand cars are more expensive than they used to be, but there are still some <£500 cars on auto trader.

fieldsofbutterflies · 23/04/2024 14:57

How old is DS and how long has he been driving?

mibbelucieachwell · 23/04/2024 14:59

If you're 55+ try Saga. It saved me £300 for myself, DH and DS . No points though.

The value of the car is virtually irrelevant. In the event of an accident the cost of your car may be only a fraction of the payout. Aside from the cost of any cars you damage, medical claims can run into millions.

What are you putting down as your voluntary excess and are you using a price comparison website?

RandomMess · 23/04/2024 17:02

Does your DS actually need to be able to use the car?

Perhaps he needs to forgo the privilege of being able to drive his Dad's car?

jannier · 23/04/2024 17:18

Take DS off of the insurance

Comfysock · 24/04/2024 11:34

So how about this...
DS as policy holder and main driver even with his points and me as 2nd named brought it down by £800...just goes to show

swapcicles · 24/04/2024 11:37

Only if DS is main driver, if not it's illegal ( or at least not allowed for insurance purposes) and therefore your insurance would be invalid.

Comfysock · 24/04/2024 17:40

Yep DS is main driver...all legit!!!!!!!!
