I haven't read anything in ages even though I want to. Today is the day to change that.
Anyone else in the same situation come, come and join in.

What are you going to read? I can recommend the HouseMaid series by Freida McFadden

passtheajax · 23/04/2024 13:15

I charged up my e reader the other day, but haven't started the book yet. I mean, I guess I could......if I can get off my phone 🤦🏻‍♀️😂

Draconis · 23/04/2024 14:08

I picked up a book called TheLamplighters from the library today. I have a weird fascination with lighthouses and this book seems really good.
If this doesn't get back into reading then I don't know what will!

I will check out Housemaid @wouldulie2me. Thanks. Maybe that will be next book...

@passtheajax that's the first step! What are you going to read?

I'm currently reading my way through the Robert Galbraith 'Strike' series. Only 1 1/2 left to go!. I would have finished earlier but the one I'm reading now is a huge hardback and I can't read it in the bath....

Draconis · 23/04/2024 20:06

@DilemmaDelilah I've wanted to read those books since they came out but I just haven't had my reading mojo for a while.
I'm gearing up to start my book tonight.

Ive recently started reading 'It ends with us' by Colleen Hoover (highly recommend so far!)😊

MountCaramel · 23/04/2024 20:11

I've started on the latest Cormoran Atrike novel 'The Running Grave'. Top class read so far, I'm only 200 pages in and it's a whopper of a book.

MabelsBeats · 23/04/2024 20:13

I can recommend ‘The Painter’s Daughters’ by Emily Howes, reading it now.

GameOfJones · 23/04/2024 21:02

Well done OP!

When I first wanted to get back into reading I had to develop the habit all over again. So I would go to bed 30 minutes earlier and read for half an hour before going to sleep.

Then I find once you are reading a book that you really enjoy you naturally want to pick it up and keep reading. It was starting that was the hard bit for me. If I feel like I'm not enjoying a book I just stop reading it and move on to something else without feeling guilty...... I don't want it to be a chore.

I also don't worry whether I'm reading something "literary" enough. If it's a trashy romance novel or a celebrity autobiography that's fine. I'm still reading.

It's such a good habit. I want my children to see me with a book in my hand more than a phone.

I’ve read The Lamplighters! Loved it!
Try the Seven Sisters series.
Or the Shardlake books if you like history.

DisaL · 23/04/2024 21:12

I can recommend The Venice Secret by Anita Chapman. I was the same as you OP about a month ago and was determined to read more. I'm on a 20 day streak now and have completed 6 of the 9 current kindle challenges. I'm really enjoying going to bed earlier and reading again 😊

Motherrr · 23/04/2024 21:14

I've also been trying to stop looking at phone for ages before bed and read. Definitely makes me feel happier and usually sleep better and earlier too. Damn mumsnet being addictive...and the interwebs in general :)

KnickerlessParsons · 23/04/2024 22:44

I can recommend Miss Benson's Beetle by Rachel Joyce.
Recommended by Queen Camilla on the Queen's book club website.

Draconis · 24/04/2024 08:18

@cardibach great to have the recommendation! I've made a start and it's really good.
Looking forward to being a reader again and checking out everyone's suggestions.

Read something with short chapters. It makes getting started easier. It got me started after ages of not reading. I just read Good Scammer by Guy Kennaway. It was fab. Set in Jamaica about scammers (surprisingly!) but very well written and interesting twists to the plot.
