Bit of a silly question about seeing a London show…..

We are spending 3 nights in London in June. We’ve never been to any kind of musical, let alone one in London, so decided to to splash out and see Cabaret at the Kit Kat club.
As we’ll be out sight seeing most of the day I was wondering whether it would be fine just going in our casual clothing or do most folk dress up ? If that’s the case we’ll have to shlep over to Goodge St and get changed. I don’t know London at all really so not sure on distances etc and how viable that is. Obviously don’t want to look a complete scruff bag but equally we’re only there 2 full days so want to make the most of it…just wondered what have other people done ?

You've got to get dressed up!

Google maps is your friend for working out distances between places.

Arrestedmanevolence · 22/04/2024 22:03

I wouldn't dress up but I don't like doing it anyway.

Can you pop into a John Lewis and get changed in the loos?

TiberiusFlam · 22/04/2024 22:04

You can wear anything to the theatre. People
dress up and people go in jogging bottoms.

You really haven’t got to.

DH and I go to see loads of theatre and comedy shows and honestly anything goes.

Hedgerow2 · 22/04/2024 22:06

You don't need to get dressed up at all! I didn't when I went to see it. Some people do of course to be in keeping with the flamboyant nature of the show, but really no need.

I go to the theatre a lot and Cabaret is one of the best things I've ever seen. Enjoy!

Kentuckycriedfrickin · 22/04/2024 22:06

You 100% do not need to dress up to go to the theatre. So long as you're clean/presentable then don't worry about going to the show in your sight-seeing clothes. Why would you want to go all the way back to the hotel or carry around a bag of spare clothes (that you might not be allowed to take into the theatre depending on their bag policy) when you could just go in whatever you're wearing?

I promise no one will care what you're wearing, you won't be the only one not dressed up, and you're going to be sitting in the dark for the most part anyway.

Trisolaris · 22/04/2024 22:06

Absolutely no need to dress up. Cabaret is awesome - have a great time!

ViscountessMelbourne · 22/04/2024 22:07

Wear whatever you like but with comfy shoes.

Runningincircles · 22/04/2024 22:07

I go to the theatre a lot. You can wear whatever you want. There will be lots of people dressed casually or as they would for a night in the pub, for example jeans and a nice top. Others will be dressed up.
I usually dress casually, as we make the most of being in London and have a full on day and evening.
My friend likes to dress up for the theatre, she dresses like she would for a wedding.

Really anything goes.

Have a great time.

I'm at the theatre in London constantly, and normally in jeans and a hoodie/sweatshirt. I've never felt out of place! Some people do dress up, but they're absolutely no where near the majority in my experience.

Alfreddoeblin · 22/04/2024 22:08

Thanks everyone. Popping into John Lewis sounds a good idea, even if just to re apply a bit of make up.

You don't need to dress up, although for that particular show, plenty of people do. You won't feel out of place if you're just in your street clothes though.

ringoffiire · 22/04/2024 22:09

Nobody will care or notice either way OP. There will be people there in tracksuits/ jogging bottoms/ jeans, trainers etc.

ViscountessMelbourne · 22/04/2024 22:26

That said, because as I understand it Cabaret is a bit more immersive, and you're playing the part of the audience, so maybe you would enjoy yourself more if you're dressed up. Goodge St to the KitKat club is twenty minutes door to door by tube.

Sonolanona · 22/04/2024 23:14

I went to see it with my DS2 and we were in jeans and comfy shoes as we had come for the day...and we were sat at the 'posh' tables for the show. It really isn't necessary to dress up and I didn't see many people who were.

The show is incredible... enjoy!

fromaytobe · 22/04/2024 23:35

I've worn jeans and a t-shirt to see the ballet at the Royal Opera House. I may have also been wearing trainers - if there's one thing you need in London, it's comfy shoes.

minipie · 22/04/2024 23:39

I went to see Cabaret on Friday and clothes ranged from full on party dress (one or two only) to jeans and T shirt. Most people were probably wearing trousers/skirt and a nice top.

FuzzyWuzzyWuzABear · 22/04/2024 23:42

I live in London and go to the theatre once a month.

Literally no-one dresses up.

It's mostly smart casual, or for a lot of people just casual.

BreakfastAtMimis · 22/04/2024 23:54

I go to the theatre in London in jeans, t-shirt and trainers. I don't think anyone gets dressed up these days, it's a very old fashioned idea that you need to look smart to go the theatre.

Wouldn't bother wasting sightseeing/eating/drinking time reapplying make up either. It'll be dark and no-one's going to be looking at you!

Alfreddoeblin · 22/04/2024 23:57

@BreakfastAtMimis I’m old, unfashionable and northern 😂
