Dd hit car whilst riding her bike

Sfuandtired · 22/04/2024 21:48

Dd 17 has collided with a car tonight whilst riding her bike, she was crossing the road and from what I can make out didn’t see the car turning, she hit the car with her wheel leaving a dent and was thrown over the handle bars banging her head on the window, the driver got out, asked if she was ok, took her name and phone number, then said he was late for work and drove of!
Dd has since had a text saying she will be sent a bill and bank details for the damage to the car! WWYD?

If this is for real - report to the police in the first case

Wolfpa · 22/04/2024 21:51

Do you have any personal liability insurance? I would give them a call.

I wouldn’t be paying them direct, if you don’t have insurance advise them to go through their car insurance.

IfIwasrude · 22/04/2024 21:53

I would call the police and ask for advice. I can't believe he didn't offer to call someone.

RampantIvy · 22/04/2024 21:55

Goodness. Is your DD OK?

rwalker · 22/04/2024 21:55

If I was her fault ( not very clear from what you’ve put ) then pay

if it wasn’t her fault then driver claims off there insurance and also pays for any cost or damages your daughter incurred

if it was DD fault and driver claims on there insurance they will obviously be out of pocket through no fault if there own and have a claim affecting there premium for 5 years

first and foremost find out exactly what happened then deal accordingly

GiantHornets · 22/04/2024 21:57

Did the car turn on front of her? Are you sure she was at fault, he shouldn’t have turned into a road if his route wasn’t clear.
Similar happened to DH on his motorbike. A car turned in front of him and DH hit it side on. Car driver was prosecuted for careless driving. He said he hadn’t seen DH at all

Beatrixslobber · 22/04/2024 21:57

Doesn’t matter who was at fault, he hit a cyclist he should have reported it to the police and he should have made sure that she was ok.

Sfuandtired · 22/04/2024 21:57

Dd is shaken up and worried she’s going to have to pay for the damage, but not injured, although we think her face may bruise, I am seriously thinking we should possibly call the police?

Find out for sure what happened and your dd is responsible.

assuming she is…

call your insurance company and see if you have any coverage at all

ask for multiple quotes before you agree on an amount for which your dd is liable.

Sweetheart7 · 22/04/2024 21:58

Why were mobiles numbers exchanged? Surely your DD was shaken enough.

peppermintsforall · 22/04/2024 22:00

Your poor DD. How sure are you that it was her hitting him and not the driver just not looking? You should definitely report it to the police.

As not to drip feed DD is not NT and struggles socially so as she was asked and not thinking straight as it was she gave her number.

What happened exactly. Can you draw a diagram so that we can understand and help

I would ring any home insurance you have….or if not ring 101.

NotAHappyBunnyHugger · 22/04/2024 22:03

Who had priority? Are you sure that your daughter was at fault?

If you're sure she's not injured (i.e. even after she's no longer in shock) she could just block the number and ignore it and it's highly unlikely anything will come of it.

Glad your daughter is mostly ok!

Sweetheart7 · 22/04/2024 22:04

@Sfuandtired SOME people are just cheeky F!!! When I was younger I was involved in something not the exact same as this but I was young and panicked. I remember calling my mum she just said...well he's got car insurance 🤣🤣🤣🤣 the no claims isn't your DDs responsibility!

I hope she is OK. I would block the man.

DrJoanAllenby · 22/04/2024 22:04

Dent could already have been there and he's a scammer taking advantage of a young woman perhaps thinking she is 18 or older and would cough up.

Like those rear end scammers.

CallMikeBanning · 22/04/2024 22:05

Sounds like something the driver will regret making a fuss of. They collided with a young cyclist and then drove off. It is not your DD who could be in trouble.

CormorantStrikesBack · 22/04/2024 22:05

I’m kind of going to need a diagram……maybe it wasn’t her fault? Even if it was you might have some sort of legal cover/insurance via your home policy.

if she isn’t covered and it’s decided it’s her fault then then he goes through his insurance. Maybe you could offer the excess payment? However his insurance may try to recover costs but probably not against a 17yo girl……they’d have to agree a payment plan of something like £5 a month.

ultimately regardless of fault he’s an ass for driving off and leaving her.

EnglandRivieraOrchard · 22/04/2024 22:05

Leaving the scene of an accident which involves injury / damage is an offence which carries a maximum penalty of 6 months imprisonment, so surprised the driver is following up on this.

ohdelay · 22/04/2024 22:05

Was she riding on the pavement or on the road? It's unclear when you say she was crossing the road because if she was on the road and a car turned across her she is definitely not at fault. If she was cycling on pavements and crossed a road from pavement to pavement then she is at fault. Would be good to establish what happened and talk the driver to hear their version of events before discussing paying for anything.

endofthelinefinally · 22/04/2024 22:05

He left the scene of an accident where someone was injured. Inform the police asap.

letsgoskiing · 22/04/2024 22:06

Driver is an idiot, it's his fault and he's just admitted to it! Police.

Scarletttulips · 22/04/2024 22:06

Car did this to my son, he rang me angrily - DS had asked him to cal me so not strictly given out my number. Police said it was a civil matter - I blocked his number.

AppleCrumbleTea · 22/04/2024 22:07

I think your DD needs to be checked out too by a medic. A bump to the head and facial bruising is quite bad
