Drums for 7yo

My 6yo has been having drum lessons at school for over a year and with his birthday coming up he's asked for drums. Space is at a premium here - he has the box room. We are also mid terrace so need to mind the noise! Are there any practical suggestions that would enable him to play at home and practice 'properly' enough to be of benefit?

Electronic ones with wireless headphones?

Octavia64 · 21/04/2024 19:29

You can buy a practice pad which is just one surface. They are fairly cheap.

Failing that, an electronic kit.

@Octavia64 do you know if they're any good to practice playing properly when you're learning? Or more for mucking about on?

They are really good, not just for kids messing about. We got some recently for older child wanting to learn, and found a decent well used Alesis kit on a local swap and sell for £100. They listen through headphones or if you're brave you can hook it up to a speaker for other people to hear. Ask your son's teacher for advice, they might even know someone selling something on

Just to be clearer, not just a pad but a whole set of pads that sets up on a stand like a real drum kit, with a stool. Can be taken apart but actually fits in corner of kid's bedroom

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 21/04/2024 20:14

They're good and with YouTube you can be "the drummer' and select genre / styles that you want.

Not my words...

Is it better to learn on electric or acoustic drums?
Are electronic drums easier to play? They're as easy to play as any kit. Electronic drums kits are designed to replicate the feel of an acoustic kit, but with far more flexibility. In terms of playing technique, they're practically the same.

Curlewwoohoo · 21/04/2024 20:14

I asked the teacher and they sent me a link to electronic kits starting at £200 which seems a bit much for his age.

I'm not sure what you mean though, any chance you could send me a link or picture, if its not too much bother!

A beginner level, good quality electronic kit with mesh heads. A lot of people start off with Alessis then moved onto Roland or similar once they get to a higher standard.

Curlewwoohoo · 21/04/2024 20:16

There is this kit for sale second hand near me...

We got DD an electronic drum kit, it cost £100 secondhand and was more than adequate for learning. You’ll also be able to sell on/upgrade fairly easily if he either gets bored or wants a better set, so will likely get most of your money back.

Headphones and/or a small amp (there are special ones for drums but I got a bass guitar one from Amazon about £25 5 years ago that did the trick ok for my beginner DD).

Comefromaway · 21/04/2024 20:24

Does it say what brand it is ?
