Anyone from Manchester who can think of any green spaces / reservoirs where there are less likely to be dogs?

I live in Ashton, Tameside and love nature but have a bit of a phobia of some dogs.
I’m not familiar with south Manchester but I wouldn’t mind travelling to areas round there.

I like sunbathing on a field near Henrietta street which seems less popular, I think because only the people who live there have heard of it. Can anyone think of any more areas like that or reservoirs etc where no one really visits?

I know it’s a way from you, but Tatton park have a rule this year that all dogs must be on a lead from May 1st
until Aug 31st, to protect all the deer & sheep.

Mayanatalia · 21/04/2024 18:37

Ooh yeah I’ve heard of this place, didn’t realise they had that rule, think I could go down there for a day out!

Alexandra Park in Oldham has few dogs. I used to clean a house for someone who had dogs nearby and they didn't take their dogs there because "the locals don't like dogs."

There are probably some dogs walked on leads but I don't think you'll see many off lead.

It's a very nice park with lovely gardens and lake.

Oh yeah I work in Oldham, someone else said not to go but maybe a weekday would be a good time

Oh wow that's amazing!!

I'm going to take my dogs as I've stopped walking them in parks because of off lead dogs!

Dogs also have to be kept on a lead/under control at Dunham Massey, also due to the deer. Its a lovely place!

Mayanatalia · 21/04/2024 19:05

Just had a google, never heard of this place before, it does look nice!

Definitely look at National Trust places locally. My first thought is Dunham Massey gardens (I think they have dog hours, but they still have to be on a lead). Also I'm not sure I've ever seen dogs inside the gardens at Lyme Park.

We have a child with a phobia of dogs so I get so frustrated with dogs everywhere and trumping the needs of humans TBH.

Mayanatalia · 21/04/2024 19:27

I know you’d think there would be a few no dogs allowed parks around!
I love the look of Lyme park, I don’t think they’re as strict with dogs being on leads compared to Tatton park
But because you have to pay to get in, maybe most dog owners would rather go somewhere free

I used to do Park Run there and went on other occasions to run or to take the kids to the paddling pool when that was open. It's a very nice park.

I used to love Marie Louise Gardens in West Didsbury when I was living down that way. Was always very tranquil and incredibly pretty

Tisfortired · 21/04/2024 21:40

Second Alexandra Park, we go a lot and you don’t see many dogs now I think of it, and when you do they are usually small terrier types on a lead rather than big ones.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 21/04/2024 21:41

Good question op!

i don’t go to parks or beaches because of this.

I wonder if the leads on rules at Tatton allow retractable leads? As I’ve seen owners with the leads extended quite far out.

Yep, I take my dog to Dunham as I know he won’t be ambushed by off lead dogs, it’s a lovely place.

MrsWhites · 21/04/2024 21:45

Another vote for Dunham Massey. There is only one area (separated from the main park) where dogs can be off lead.

It’s a lovely place too, I was there with my dog last week, there were lots of deer to see.

Cheshire has a few nice national trust places - tatton park, Dunham Massey and Quarry bank are all nice. The national trust membership is really reasonably priced too.

cfmtb · 21/04/2024 21:46

I think RHS Bridgewater might suit too?

Mayanatalia · 21/04/2024 22:49

That’s a good point actually, my phobia’s worse than ever lately and I’m concerned I might see one with a long lead 🙄 I was thinking you might be less likely to get dangerous dogs in these areas though

There should be dog free parks.

I was visiting a graveyard which said no dogs and I saw a man take his in.

Dogs are definitely barred from cemeteries. Mine would want to sniff and mark every monument and whilst I can drag him away from them, that wouldn't be a fun walk.

As it is, I don't let mine pee on the war memorial here in the town centre. Nor on people's doorways. All bollards, posts, corners of buildings, etc are fair game. But some things are sacred.

userxx · 22/04/2024 13:20

Considering the amount of dogs there are, very few are dangerous. All the dogs I’ve met in Dunham have been very well behaved and that includes the lovely XL bully who was obviously muzzled. I don’t think you’d have any problems there.

Alfreddoeblin · 22/04/2024 13:36

Rivington in Bolton ? Yes there are dogs but it’s so big that you can get away from people really easily..

Yes but some jump up to be friendly and I’m not keen.

ErrolTheDragon · 22/04/2024 16:57

Dunham Massey doesn't allow dogs in the garden before noon.

Checking places for what you can do with a dog is helpful the other way round too.

Most of the reservoir type places I know (north of Manchester in various places) are popular with dog walkers. Except I do know one place that has specific restrictions, some of the paths/shore at Clowbridge (near Burnley)...there may be others.

(For lovers of outdoors activities, there's a watersports club there which was great when I used to go there with my teenage DD a few years ago)

If you like nice gardens and can tolerate well behaved on-lead dogs, Arley Hall is lovely.
