Hi everyone, I’ve been asked to deliver a eulogy for a neighbour that I have known not that well for a few years. I feel terrible in saying this but I don’t feel comfortable doing it and feel that this should be more a family thing. How do I respectfully decline?

Are they asking you to read it out on their behalf because they aren’t able? Or are they asking you to write it and read it?

Just say you don't feel comfortable, if you want t you could write a paragraph or so about what your neighbour meant to you, it will help whoever does the Eulogy?

Just say you don't feel you're able to do it. No need to give an elaborate reason.

If the family don't want to do it, the celebrant does, it's their job. All the funerals I've been to, the celebrant has a chat with the family about the person to find out what they were like and some nice memories, and they work it into the eulogy.

I'd use that exact phrase. Tell them you're honoured by the request but must respectfully decline.

Just say "sorry i never feel comfortable speaking in public and so can't do it. Hope you find someone else"

Loads of people would feel uncomfortable standing up to address a congregation like that. The funeral celebrant should do it

Say no, it would be too much. The celebrant can do it. Delivering a eulogy at an event like that is a big deal.

As PP asked, are you just being asked to read out something they've written, but you don't feel comfortable standing up in public and reading? In which case just say that you feel honoured they've asked you but it's out of your comfort zone so you don't feel able to do it. The celebrant or whoever is conducting the funeral will be more than happy to do it - I've seen it many times.
DH was asked to read a eulogy for ndn who had only lived there for 4 years so he was surprised to be asked. However, DH is used to public speaking so it wasn't a problem.
