Does anyone know Gloucester? Tall Ships!

Hi - I'm thinking about taking my 10 year old as there's a band playing that he loves. We live in the Newcastle and I don't drive so need a proper plan!

If you know Gloucester, where would be best to book to stay please?

There are places to rent at the Quay, probs on Airbnb. Glos isn't that big so wherever you stay in the centre would be fine. There's also a premier inn at Glos Quays as well. It's a little walk through the centre from the train station but probably only 10-15m.
Glos Quays is an outlet shopping centre with cinema and loads of restaurants including independent places at the opposite end. The Quays area where the Tall Ships event is, is really nice to walk around.

Oh that's great info - we love an outlet place too! 😀

Tall Ships is a great day out. Loads to see and do no matter what your age. If your son is a Harry Potter fan you could also wander round Gloucester Cathedral to see where some of it was filmed.

I too would recommend staying near the Quays.

I love watching the Tall Ships come in through the Gloucester and Sharpness Canal. Seeing these huge vessels go through a very small canal is amazing. They almost touch the sides.

Thank you! Just looking at train prices(so expensive!) now 😀

Also the train station is only a 20 minute walk to the Quays.

I'd also recommend the Soldier’s Museum at the Quays. Lots for young kids to do.

Looks like there's a Premier inn and a travelodge both within 0.5 miles of the Quay which are really cheap!

Personally would go for the Travel Lodge as that is actually in the outlet centre.

Haribosweets · 20/04/2024 19:08

The travel lodge is located within the quays outlet and also less than 5 min walk to the tall ships to the Docks. Lots of restaurants and a cinema too all in the vanicity of the quays outlet. The town centre is about 10 min walk but it's not as good with a lot of shops closed. Definitely visit Gloucester Catherdral though - 10 mins from quays. If you are a rugby fan, go to Kingsholm and watch Gloucester play! About 20 min walk

Another vote for staying at the quays.
Gloucester is a very mixed city but the quays, cathedral and the tall ships is a lovely experience.

This Travelodge? It gets terrible reviews but I can grit my teeth 🤣 All that way for a band I don't even like - the things we do for kids eh?

My daughter and SIL stayed at the Travelodge at Xmas (he has allergies and I have dogs so they can’t stay with me) and it was absolutely fine.
