Give me your best tips for a week in New York

Heading to New York with a friend for a week soon. I haven't been for years and have no time to research so hoping for some awesome tips & advice! We want to see all the sites, eat some decent though not too flashy food (only taking jeans & trainers so nowhere with a dress code), go to galleries and museums and up for going off the beaten track for hidden gems. We're both knackered menopausal mums so not up for noisy bars/nightlife, but we would like a quiet drink/coffee in a rooftop bar at the end of the day.

Hit me with your best tips!

Oh, also best way to get from JFK to Manhattan (one of us has a dodgy hip so may not manage the subway with a suitcase).

Get the earliest morning flight out you can. Station Island Ferry is free and worth a ride. Ellis Island is really worth a visit, we spent a whole day there. Central Park is lovely, to get around quickly use the subway, we bought tickets for the hop on hop off bus which were expensive but worth it as the tour guide tells you all about NYC as you are travelling. Have a brilliant time.

I did the Edge at Hudson Yards last time I was there. Went up at night and the views are out of this world. Highly recommended

If you can, book tickets to go up to the crown of rhe Statue of Liberty. They are not expensive but get booked up. If there is no availability, keep checking for returns.

My favourite thing in New York is to walk along the High Line.

Time your visit to state of liberty, google helps, we walked in and no queue. I think the view from the Rockefeller centre.

the Morgan library is fab, and has a lovely cafe where they used to do a 3 martini lunch. Skip quickly throug Times Square and do not have a drink there.

find a bar in Washington square area. There’s a park that used to be called needle park, now Bryant park, has pop up cinemas and things.

walk over Brooklyn bridge for pizza.

govenors island on a nice day is a break.

I really enjoyed the tenement museum.

As you’ve got a whole week, you could take the train up along the Hudson to one of the little towns up there, like Beacon. Very scenic and a complete contrast to Manhattan. I couldn’t believe how close the city is to beautiful countryside.

Me too! I was trying to remember the name of it when I posted earlier so thank you for reminding me!

Lots of the above plus that the Guggenheim is an interesting building but the art inside is mainly by two artists and it felt a bit limited. The Metropolitan Museum of Art is fabulous. Take a day out of the city and go on the train up the river to one of the riverside small towns such as Irvington for a change of pace. The subway is great and easy to use. New York central library has a wonderful little museum with some fascinating artefacts. And, sadly, expect to pay a hideous amount for food. We were in New York in 2022 and it was fabulous but so expensive.
