How much attention do you pay to washing labels?

I usually just remember which clothes can tumble and which ones can't.

But I had a baby a couple of days ago and there's flipping hundreds of vesties and pjs etc. that all look exactly the same material and that I am not familiar with yet... but half of them say do not tumble and half say I can.... but they look the SAME...!

Not talking about woolen things or clothes that clearly include something "unusual' but... just normal clothes.

Any experience/life hacks to offer a frazzled mum under attack from an unfamiliar laundry pile?

From what I remember when ds was little it all got chucked in the drier. I wasn’t faffing with it with everything else going on!

None unless it's something of mine that I spent a bit extra on

StarDolphins · 19/04/2024 20:33

Congrats on your baby! I remember the frazzled feeling!

I just chucked it all in together. I do didn’t put new black/red/navy stuff with white but anything else got washed together! If it was black/red/navy and had any white/cream on then it got chucked in too - my thinking was that it’s obvs colour fast or they wouldn’t have added a light colour on the garment iyswim!

Only if the item is clearly delicate or wool, otherwise everything is chucked into the same wash load then dryer.
Not enough time to be faffing about with care labels

DappledThings · 19/04/2024 21:26

I put most things in the dryer. Can't imagine any baby clothes can't go in.

UnravellingTheWorld · 19/04/2024 21:54

I separate do lights and darks. Anything that says "machine washable" goes in at 40. If it says 30, it goes in at 40. If it says cold wash only, you guessed it it gets 40.

I don't tumble dry anything

FusionChefGeoff · 19/04/2024 22:11

The only thing I check is if it's wool / cashmere etc.

Absolutely everything else just gets the "survive or die" treatment

FusionChefGeoff · 19/04/2024 22:13

Oh and they grow out of stuff so fast it really doesn't matter - I actively bought big with the expectation it would shrink a bit in the drier

LiterallyOnFire · 19/04/2024 22:16

There aren't many baby clothes that a) aren't cotton, b) won't survive a 40 degree standard wash and synthetics cycle in the dryer. Anything that can't survive that, isn't proper baby clothing, IMO, bay then I'm not a petit bateau cashmere type.

tighterthancramp · 19/04/2024 22:25

My baby is 6 months old and I only use the drier if I'm desperate but I've just bunged it in and hoped for the best. They hardly wear stuff so even if it shrinks a little they'll prob be out of it before you notice.

If it's nice out, the washing is on the line or out on the patio on the maiden.
If it's not nice out it's on the radiator or on the maiden in the kitchen.

I wouldn't put anything expensive in the first but other than that all vests etc will be fine

ironorchids · 19/04/2024 22:44

Totally ignore them. Everything goes on a dark wash and gets line or tumble dried depending on the weather. One or two items come out worse for wear, but with a newborn, your sanity is more important than the one or two items that really will get damaged!

Other things like baby blankets I might do on a separate wash and hang.

Thanks all! That's a relief!
