London Mayor and Assembly Elections

I've just received my postal ballot papers, and a bit confused on one aspect - have checked the Electoral Commission website and can't find the answer but I'm sure someone on MN knows the answer!

Pink paper - for the the Mayor, 13 named candidates, tick one box, first past the post wins. Simple

Yellow paper - London Assembly member for local constituency, 5 named candidates, tick one box, first past the post wins. Simple

Now this is the one that's confusing me:

Orange paper - 15 choices, one tick, the first 12 choices are names of parties only, the last three are named individuals, two of whom have 'independent' after their name, and one (Laurence bloody Fox) who doesn't.

I'm wondering how the parties select the individuals that will take up the Assembly places that they earn by getting the most votes? Confused

No idea.
Also no idea that there are 13 choices for Mayor.
I have only seen information and campaigning for one - Khan.
If the other 12 can't be bothered to promote themselves it's not a good sign.
(I actually though didn't realise Khan was Labour - I thought he was Tory 😂)

You thought Khan was a Tory?

I presume you're not a London voter!

I had a booklet come through the post this week listing all the candidates and what they plan.

@Westfacing no I am London but I don't remember the last mayor election for some reason.
I think I had got in my head that he is Tory because everyone seems to "hate" him (and everyone hates the Tories 😂).
@SoupDragon hopefully I will get that leaflet.

It came in an envelope like this. Looked like junk mail 😂

Yes that's the information brochure I got a week or two ago, and for some reason threw it away!

I would assume it's like the old Euro elections, where the parties had a list of candidates in order, and depending on how many spots they won from votes, the top however many on their list would get the places.

@SoupDragon my leaflet arrived this morning.
Disappointed that Count Binface didn't put his manifesto in 😂

If he's scrapping the ULEZ extension he'll get my vote! 😂

Needmorelego · 20/04/2024 10:45

@SoupDragon with a name like Binface I would be hoping for more public bins (that are actually emptied) and better recycling schemes.
I'm sure I remember reading somewhere that many years ago a house plant stood for New York mayor - and got several votes😂

@SoupDragon that's awesome. I can feel my voting pencil hovering over his tick box and I'm thinking "Shall I?".....and then voting for someone dull and sensible 😂

LlynTegid · 20/04/2024 10:54

The London Assembly party vote (orange paper) is only to choose a party (or individual where named) to be represented in the Assembly. The party chooses names in order, and if they get a seat, first choice person gets it, then second etc etc. You have no say in which person in each party is chosen.

So if the Lib Dems get one seat in this way, it will be Hina Bokari, if the Greens it will be Sian Berry, if it is Reform it will be Alex Wilson.

Called closed party lists.

My only issue is with no 15 - it's not on Selsdon Road, it's on South End before it joins Selsdon Road. If he can't get those details right... 🤷🏻‍♀️

@SoupDragon 😂😂

Bumping this thread to ask if anybody knows anything about any of the London-wide Assembly Member candidates. I've got the list in front of me in the booklet but there is no information about them anywhere as far as I can see, except which party they represent. So, if I'm understanding this correctly, for that vote, you're just picking a party and the party has already decided who they'd put in, in which order, if they get any of these supplementary seats. Not keen on this arrangement at all. I like to know something about each individual seeking my vote.
