Maybe you didn't come across as bad as you think?

I recently got a job despite me thinking the interview went terribly. They said they were really impressed. I was flummoxed.

Sometimes your experience will also speak for itself.

Don't give up hope yet.

WeightoftheWorld · 19/04/2024 14:20

Yes, my DH has! But bit of a niche role at the time where there was a skills shortage so unlikely to have been very many applicants.

Also, as PP said perhaps it didn't go as bad as you think. I've certainly come out of interviews not hopeful as I didn't do as well as I'd hoped and then still been offered the job and given glowing feedback!

Nagado · 19/04/2024 14:26

I have. I had to do a test first of all and didn’t follow half the instructions about format etc. Miraculously I then got an interview. I walked through torrential rain and a tornado to get there and looked like I’d just had a fight with a swamp monster. All of the other candidates were internal so looked immaculate. During the interview I was asked about something that should have been general knowledge but I’d never heard of and didn’t have a clue. I fluff and blustered my way through and resigned myself to staying where I was a bit longer. And then I was offered the job.

Good luck!

purplecorkheart · 19/04/2024 14:33

Yup, I felt I did awful. Got flustered answering questions. I didn't get my point across, so I thought I had zero chance. Got job. Interviewers said I came across really well and was godsmacked that I thought it went badly.

Yes.
Did not prepare at all because I suspected they'd already lined someone up (not unheard of in my organisation).
Couldn't answer some detailed questions about the department but my experience, resilience and transferable skills were more important.
And my (future) boss told me during the interview I'd be "a good fit".

Mumaway · 19/04/2024 14:41

I did. The interviewer told me I interviewed terribly but that they really liked me, thought I had good experience and would fit well in the team. Thank goodness. If you can't be good, be nice!

Coconuthotchocolate · 20/04/2024 12:44

Yes! I didn’t answer the first question properly and froze. Managed to pull myself together but came out and thought omg I didn’t say x, y or z! I apologised to one of the panel when they contacted me and they were ‘what?’ We are offering you the job!’ You were very good!’ 😊

Makemefeelbetterplease · 20/04/2024 18:04

Thanks for the replies. I was cringing all day / really kicking myself.

i overthink things at the best of times but can’t get this out of my head!

Yes me

I got an attack of nerves during the presentation 10 mins to the two panel. Interviewers. My throat closed over and I could barely speak

Then I interviewed terriblly- it was so weird I was totally unprepared bombed every question. For a job I already do.

Was cringing too. It was really bizarre as I was so well prepared for the presentation.

Go knows how I beat the other candidate.

AnnoyinglyOptimistic · 23/04/2024 16:37

My boss told me some time after he'd hired me that on paper I was brilliant, but to interview I was one of the worst he'd ever interviewed!

Seven years in and he told me that one of the best decisions he ever made was hiring me...so don't lose hope!

muddyford · 23/04/2024 16:44

I was being interviewed for a job with the Inland Revenue (one of the many iterations of what is now HMRC). The tax inspector described what I would be doing and I said I didn't think that was my sort of thing at all. She looked at me thoughtfully and told me that with that attitude I sounded perfect for the rôle. I was there ages!

Cotswoldbee · 23/04/2024 16:52

Chin up, if may still be ok.👍
I was offered a role last year despite telling them in the interview that the hours would just not work for me and I was no longer interested.😖

After taking early retirement I initially (and wrongly) thought a little job would be nice to keep my hand in.
Applied for something that looked promising and got straight through to the interview stage. During the interview, everything was going well until they started talking hours and it was immediately apparent that it was not going to work for me. Told them this and sort of lost interest from them on but later, I received a call offering me the role (on the same hours I had told them would not work).
Obviously I turned them down and instead embraced retirement.😉

I am currently interviewing for some open roles in my team.

One candidate was an absolute car crash but I made him an offer because I could see through his nerves & mistakes in the interview.

It may not be as bad as you feel it was.

Survivedtheex13 · 23/04/2024 19:10

Yes, years back I went for an interview as I desperately needed a job following split with husband and children to support. The interviewer dictated a letter, my shorthand was absolutely appalling and to be honest I ended up just doing a lot of squiggling 🙄. I apologised and said I couldn’t actually read what I’d written and thanks for his time. I got the job as I was the only one to ask whether he knew the recipient so that I could add the correct salutation and that impressed him. He bought a dictaphone for future letters, lol.

MaMisled · 23/04/2024 19:29

I had an interview for a senior role in a nursing home and I was very nervous but managed to answer questions ok. Then I farted. The loudest, squeakiest kind. The manager smiled, squeezed my arm and said " you're going to fit in a treat!" And I did too!

Daniki · 23/04/2024 19:47

Yep, thought I really messed up the interview but I got the job, and it's my dream one! Best of luck

Battrike · 23/04/2024 19:55

Many years ago, as a young adult, I had an interview to work in a children's nursery. I think I managed to answer some of the questions OK but then they started asking about my family (long, unhappy story) and the nerves got to me.....I cried 🤦‍♀️ I was very embarrassed and wanted to run away! Luckily for me I'd spent a little time in the setting and one of the more reserved little girls engaged with me which impressed the staff so I ended up getting the job!

BoxOfCats · 23/04/2024 20:09

Me! It was so bad I thought I'd save myself the trouble of feedback and called to withdraw my application. They told me that was a shame because they'd been about to call me to offer me the job!

That was 2 years ago and I'm still in the job now...
