Can you actually be bothered with a faffy skincare routine?

My SIL who is late 40's has the most beautiful skin for any age and legitimately does look many years younger than her age. Her skincare routine is a bit of a faff and she apparently breaks her face down into zones and treats them all accordingly so eye area, nose, chin, cheeks, forehead, neck and so on and that this often means applying different products to different areas of the face so one product might be used around the eye area and mouth, another is then used only on the nose, one on the eye lashes, then something else will be used all over the face and then another localised treatment will be applied and she always wears a very high ultra spf which she reapplies during the day often repeatedly.

She doesn't have a routine as such but looks at her face each time she does her skincare and "assesses" what she needs and there are also massages, facial exercises, led masks, double cleansing at night.

It obviously all pays off because as I say her skin is amazing but it just all seems like an incredible faff to me. I think I am doing well if I stick to a cleanse and moisturise routine and I am often just wash my face in the shower which is a big no no to her as she says the water you shower with is usually to hope for your facial skin. I'd like the results she gets but I just cannot imagine committing to 30+ minutes to do my skincare twice a day!

I would say the majority of women are like me take their make up off, cleanse, slap a moisturiser with SPF on and done, maybe try the odd serum or mask but that is it. Am I write in thinking that?

Fuck no. I use Clinique 'Take The Day Off' cleansing balm morning and night, followed by Boots Renewal & Restore (or whatever it's called) Serum, followed by Elizabeth Arden moisturiser. Oh and Botox twice a year. That's it.

I have always been complimented on my skin which is nice, but I really think it's just 80% genetic.

Like a previous poster my face gets splashed with warm water when I shower. When I wash my hair it gets a rinse with shampoo.
Can't be bothered with make up either - that's a couple of hours out of every day when I could be doing something far more fun!
However I wear a hat and use kid's SPF50 sunscreen when out in the sun from spring through into autumn... I do spend quite a lot of time outdoors.
I have very greasy skin - maybe that makes a difference to appearance?

baby soap in the shower for my face, that’s it
nearly 50yo
this skincare stuff is crazy
the money spent on all that stuff could probably fund a holiday.

I certainly couldn’t be arsed to go to those lengths no, but I do look at my face when I do my evening skin care and think I need a good exfoliating toner or a good hydrating serum etc, I don’t think what I put on my face really has much effect but I enjoy a 3 minute pamper of an evening. Some times though I just wash my face and stick on a moisturiser. People tell me I have good skin, my mum has pretty decent skin and my grandma has incredible skin so I think genetics come in to play.

I am a bit obsessed with skincare tbh and at 41 I do often get compliments on my skin. I think because I suffered from terrible acne as a teenager though and had to take roaccutane to get rid of it in my 20’s I am super conscious of taking care of it. I don’t go quite as far as treating each zone different though OP although you have intrigued me with that so might give it a go!

NoCarbsForMe · 16/01/2025 06:44

I always limit the amount of crap i put on my body.

Water to wash
Natural oils at night
Spf in the morning (if i remember correctly)

ALWAYS getting compliments on my skin. I'm 49.

@HornyHornersPinkyWinky No I am not annoyed about her having a head start, I've known her since I was a teenager and she started dating my brother and even then she would warn me to use SPF on my face when I was laying out in the summer but did I listen, no I just rolled my eyes at her!

My point is more that even if I did everything she did now I still wouldn't get anywhere near the same results as what she has now is a product of ongoing prevention, maintenance and improvements over 30 years so as for me why bother!

The spf is the only thing that's made a difference to her

The rest is fatf op.

I'm 60, do absolutely no skin care of any kind. I feel like I look around 60. Which seems fair 😁.

Deathraystare · 16/01/2025 07:21

I actually enjoy a skin routine and my skin does respond well but I am rather lazy and sometimes 'forget' to do anything. much. I must admit I love serums. I need some slip before I put a cream on as my skin on my cheeks can get so dry and I taken to putting an oil on top. I scared myself by looking in the mirror at my eye creases and neck 'pleats' !

Onetimeonly2024 · 16/01/2025 07:53

I do, but it takes 5 minutes, morning and night. I cleanse, use my Foreo Bear, tone, use serum (vit c in the morning, retinol at night) and appropriate moisturiser and eye cream (spf 50 day, different night time one) Then I have a neck cream and a décolletage cream. I’m also about to invest in the Lyma laser. I see it as 10 minutes a day of self care. I’m late 40s.

MrsSethGecko · 16/01/2025 07:56

Soap and water, Nivea in the blue tub mixed with collagen serum. Eat a lot of fruit and veg. I get plenty of fresh air.
My skin is lovely if I do say so myself but I look my age and don't have any fillers or anything. (Which is how I like it.)

RedRobinGoesBobbing · 16/01/2025 08:03

A few years ago, I listened to a podcast called “sounds like a cult” and an episode called “the cult of skincare”. It really opened my eyes and Now I only use a bit of organic oil when my skin gets dry. I am mid 40’s and have clear skin.

Looking at the ingredients in most products, the main base does the work but the rest is filled with chemicals that prolong the shelf life. They can be doing more harm than good as they disrupt the natural balance of your skin leading to a dependence on skincare. I use Yuka to determine the evidence behind each chemical in a product before deciding if it is worthy.

Out of her routine, it’s the derma needling that is making the biggest difference

NeedANapAgain · 16/01/2025 08:35

A town called Twinsburg has a multiples convention every year and a photographer has been taking pictures of the same sets of identical twins year after year, to document genetics vs environment on aging and skin appearance. Obviously, genetics doesn’t play as big a part as some people think.

Can you actually be bothered with a faffy skincare routine?
RedRobinGoesBobbing · 16/01/2025 10:11

To be fair though that is the result of sun damage and possibly smoking which has damaged the skin. No evidence to suggest the other twin uses skincare other than a decent sun defence cream.

It would be interesting if they could strip away those factors and show what is left as I think they would look very similar genetically.

acheyback · 16/01/2025 10:21

please be very careful about thinking people
are only using skincare. it
stands to reason that many people
who are very invested in a complex skincare routine are also interested in things like botox etc and are using it but not declaring
it !!!

SPF and staying out of sun and not smoking key IMHO.

superplumb · 16/01/2025 11:28

I do use various creams and lotions but dividing up your face is pointless as actives travel anyway esp retinol or tret.
Easy to do, wash with water in AM, vit c, moisturiser then sof50. While that sinks in, dress then makeup.
Evening cleanse, another active so for me either bha or GA or retinol. Followed by moisturiser again.
Occasionally a mask eith BHA in.
Looking at LeD masks currently. Have had botox but long since ran out.
