Misunderstandings your kids have about the past?

There's been a few post recently about real things that surprise the current generation about the past. But what about the opposite? Have your kids got any strange misapprehensions about your youth, or further back?
I can remember 2 that made me laugh. One was my elder DS aged about 6 asking my Dad "Grandad, what was it like in the war?" and when my Dad started to talk about stuff like rationing and then joining the Navy in his late teens DS replied "No, I mean how did it feel when everything was black and white and did it hurt when you turned into colour?"
And the other more recent.DH and I were recalling the famous Michael Fish gaffe re the 1987 hurricane and younger DS said "Wow. I didn't know they'd invented weather forecasts back when you were young!" 😳

many moons ago, my brother probably about 6/7 asked our grandparents when their world turned from black and white to colour too!

We were talking about buildings in the school where I taught; they wanted to know how the drama centre got its name.
I told them it was a former Drama teacher, and I remembered the official opening, by Prince Edward. I knew they were studying the Tudor period at the time, hence the names of Henry VIII's offspring were fresh in their minds.
But I didn't expect, "Gosh were you teaching here in Tudor times, Miss Twosheds?"

Early on during Covid when it was considered very serious, I caught it and was quite poorly in bed for 2 weeks. I was a single parent at the time and my son watched a lot of tv for these weeks, and my mum (who lived next door) delivered him food on a tray to the front door, but didn’t come in. He is convinced that he “raised himself” for the year we were on lock down because I nearly died, and that his Grandma used to push his food through the letter box which he had to catch with his hands 😱

it’s actually quite interesting how it must of felt to him (he was about 7 at the time) and I can only assume my mum posted him a chocolate bar or something through the letter box once and it’s stuck with him!

My dd (now 17) did the 1990's as a HISTORY topic when she was in year five.

She seemed to think we were all walking round in Union Jack dresses and going to parties with Tony Blair at ten Downing Street.

FirstTimeHomeowner · 05/09/2024 16:04

My son asked me what it was like when grandma was a baby and I was looking after her 😏

TickingAlongNicely · 05/09/2024 16:10

I had to explain September 11th to DD (aged 11) last week.

The scary thing about this... her father is in thecArmy, actually posted to Afghanistan when she was born. Shes always known thats where he was. But never asked why.

ilovesooty · 05/09/2024 16:14

I once marked an essay from a pupil who wrote
"It was difficult in Victorian times. The roads were awful and people had to get out of their cars and push"

DragonInAmber · 05/09/2024 16:20

I asked my DM ( born in 1932) what it was like to wear a crinoline when we were doing a history project once. She was not amused. 😄

DragonInAmber · 05/09/2024 16:22

Mind you I find it frightening now that DGD is doing history about the miners strikes and such!

That's not history, that's my life time!

I taught a history topic about the 1990s. One group brought in tea bags to stain the paper of their poster to make it look like it was from the olden days😂 like a pirate treasure map or something

Toddlerteaplease · 05/09/2024 16:31

@modgepodge we did that with tea bags in the 90's!

KnickerlessParsons · 05/09/2024 16:50

DH fought in the Falklands War.
We were amazed when DS covered the war in history because to us it's more like "current affairs".

35965a · 05/09/2024 16:54

My kids asked if we used slate and chalk at school. I went to school in the 90s & 00s. They were also convinced colour TVs didn’t exist when I was young and were shocked I didn’t grow up watching black and white stuff.

ebts · 05/09/2024 16:59

A child in my school asked a visiting fireman if he had been at the Great Fire of London.
My grandson had been learning about the nativity, and came home and said to me, " Everyone loved the baby Jesus, except maybe Hitler and Guy Fawkes."

CartoonMorten · 05/09/2024 17:05

My son asked me what it was like when everything was fuzzy in the '90s. Clearly subjected him to too much TOTP2!

Toddlerteaplease · 05/09/2024 16:31

@modgepodge we did that with tea bags in the 90's!

Well yes I also did it in the 1990s - but to create documents which looked 100s of years old not 30 years old 😂

Toddlerteaplease · 05/09/2024 17:13

@modgepodge. I didnt realise it was to make 90's things look ancient!

Maybe @modgepodge's students were onto something. They were emulating what 90's students did in the olden days to make things look even more olden. Or something 🤷‍♀️

SprigatitoYouAndIKnow · 05/09/2024 17:41

Ds2 often asked me what life was like when I was young and there were dinosaurs. He also thought that we lived in wood houses as bricks hadn't been invented.

Mumofteenandtween · 05/09/2024 17:46

After explaining evolution to dd, she asked whether granny and grandad used to be monkeys.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/09/2024 17:13

@modgepodge. I didnt realise it was to make 90's things look ancient!

I think that was the idea anyway?! Every time I did it, it was also screwed up and maybe burned at the edges, to make it look tatty and ancient!

NewName24 · 05/09/2024 18:05

I don't think it is just our dc, there are often posts on here claiming all sorts of weird things about "back in the 80s / 90s / 70s / '20 years ago' / etc that are way off the timeline.
