How much do you pay for a dental check up and a hygiene appointment (scale & polish)?

Me - £125 total

I recently paid the equivalent of 70 pounds abroad for the hygienist. Previously paid 75 pounds in England in summer 2022 and previously twice with a check-up in Scotland, which was very cheap then.

But the one I just had abroad was a longer process with more steps than the dental practice I'd been to here used. The hygienisation was billed as combo of scaling, teeth sandblasting, polish and fluorisation. In the UK, I just recall something with the water cleaning. This one involved two parts where they put a mould into your mouth and had you bite down and hold it for a while. The second one of this had this pinkish foam.

I hate the water cleaning that the hygienist does (had a bad experience with the first hygienist who did it to me) so I insist they do it the old fashioned way with the manual instruments.

Given the £158.50 I spent last month was the first amount since pre-covid, I guess I've saved on not having a dental plan!

Mind you, I had to have a bottom back molar refilled (as the old filling cracked and fell out) and that was £195.00! (Plus £43.00 for the temp filling whilst I waited for my designated dentist to come back off holiday!)

I went to the hygienist recently and nearly fainted when they told it was £135. They didn't even spend 30 minutes. This is a private dentist, but pre-Covid it was £75.

£22 a month via Denplan includes two checkups and cleanings. Get £25 back from my employer's health cash plan. Basically £60 per visit.

Meadowfinch · 18/04/2024 18:22

I pay 26.80 for an NHS checkup twice a year and £60 twice a year for a hygienist - no plan.

So 173.60 a year or about £15 a month.

Snackpocket · 18/04/2024 18:23

NHS dentist for check up so £28.60, Hygienist is £58 for a 20 min appointment.

LittleFriendSusan · 18/04/2024 18:32

£26.80 for NHS check-up & £49 for hygienist. I can claim back through health cash plan.

TherebytheGraceofGodgoI · 18/04/2024 18:56

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 18/04/2024 19:03

Private practice in the North- we charge:
New patient £130
Examination £62
30 minutes hygiene £64

We’ve worked out that the hourly rate to run a surgery including all expenses, overheads and staffing costs is £350 per hour, so work back from there.

TabbyMcTabster · 18/04/2024 20:22

I have a Bupa dental plan which costs me £27.50 a month.

For that I get 2 check ups a year and 2 hygienists appointments a year

pelotonaddiction · 18/04/2024 20:50

Should add my denplan is £21pm for denplan care
2 hygienist appointments
2 dentist check ups
All other work excluding lab fees (recent fillings, extra check ups and a tiny bit of cosmetic bonding all done under that)
