Hi all,

I'm going to Liverpool tomorrow with my teenage (19) son to look at the uni. We're arriving midmorning Friday, leaving Saturday evening. We are at the uni Saturday morning till about lunch time.

Sooo, we have Friday lunch, dinner, drinks and a couple of hours to fill on Saturday.

What should we do? Staying centrally (Leonardo hotel old jury's inn), breakfast included.

I've been on independent Liverpool, trip advisor and Google, but like all major cities, there's just so much choice. And I don't fancy wandering round for hours aimlessly. We want to have a bit of fun!

Hidden gems, must sees, your favourite places... Hit me!

Thanks!

We loved the Beatles tour, the bus leaves from near the docks. It was a great way to see the city and the guide was fabulous, very entertaining and one of our highlights.

Bold street was good for food.

Mowgli (indian) and Leaf (in an old cinema) are two of my favourites in Bold St. Interesting decor and lots of veggie options. Both quite informal. There are lots of other good places on the same street. The Bridewell pub in a former jail or the Philharmonic a short walk away for a pint afterwards.

Poppity3 · 18/04/2024 16:07

The Egg on Bold st, legendary veggie cafe!

Sefton Park is nice for a wander and lots of lovely places to eat.

If you fancy a climb (!) go up the tower in Liverpool Cathedral. Or go to the wigwam cathedral for a wander around, the stained glass is beautiful.

The docks, the Tate has a nice cafe too. And there might be something on at the Bluecoat, if not there are still some indie shops and a cafe there.

The Baltic triangle is good for evening dinner/drinks.

Hope that’s helpful!

This is all amazing, thanks.

The egg for lunch it is! Sounds fab.

Maray on Bold streeg has lots of veggie offerings.

The disco cauliflower is amazing x

Kleptronic · 18/04/2024 21:57

I second Maray, I was there the other week, the veggie food is absolutely lush

lovelychops · 18/04/2024 22:02

Maray is gorgeous and really worth trying. Egg is definitely a low key kind of place. You will be spoilt for choice on Bold Street - there's a place called Organico which does all veggie / vegan. Leaf is nice too.

bravotango · 18/04/2024 22:09

Sanskruti is great for veggie Indian food! If on campus, also go for a pint in the Caledonia and then walk down the hill into town, down bold st and to the docks. If halls are of interest nip to Smithdown on the bus and see Greenbank + Sefton park too. Green days cafe on lark lane does a good veggie breakfast. It's a marvellous place to be a student, have a great trip!

mikado1 · 18/04/2024 22:10

Salthouse tapas bar was really good for Vegetarian food but it's years ago now. Not sure if still there.

WeightoftheWorld · 18/04/2024 22:11

Egg is something else tbh, there's loads of good places to eat on Bold Street as people say, but Egg is just a real legendary place for Scouse veggies, definitely make a visit!

Albert Dock area great for sightseeing - loads of museums, art gallery, big wheel, stunning architecture. There's also a museum, art gallery, the beautiful central library etc at St George's Plateau/across from St John's Gardens.

Manifest is a lovely place for dinner with great veggie options. In Baltic Triangle.

Disco cauliflower? We're in! We love Indian food (we're Brummies, so it's in our dna!).

So, food is sorted. Just where to go for drinks and evening atmosphere. Ds wants to go out out. I've reminded him that at my age, I could turn into a pumpkin any time after 12, but I get it, he wants to see the uni AND the extra curricular stuff. So, where do we go student drinking? (not too studenty, I still fancy something decent to drink!).

Thanks folks, the insider info is ace!

Hmm, I couldn't see much veggie on the menu, and ds has a nut allergy too, and the only veggie dish had walnuts in it. Looks fab tho.

I'm still storing the recommendations because if he ends up going there to uni, we will want other places to go when we come and visit, dh is a bit jealous that I get to go this time, so he is definitely going to want to experience the best of Liverpool next time.

Oh, and we're struggling to say the Baltic triangle, because we have the Balti triangle. It's a tongue twister for both of us!

Great bars and restaurants on Lark Lane, a short taxi ride from the centre. Lots of places to eat also on Hope Street ...you have to visit the Philharmonic pub!
It's my favourite UK city.

Sorry just realised u want veggie!

Amalia in the heart of the city is a good, lively, Italian (booking essential). It’s near the Docks which are always worth a mooch and a coffee. You could also check to see if there is any live music in town that takes your fancy. That way you could go out out without going full clubbing. If you want to go further out, Penny Lane Wine Bar is worth a visit. They do a great breakfast and you can get your obligatory photo next to the Penny Lane street sign. Have a great time. And congratulations to your son - it’s a brilliant place to be a student.

Bjorkdidit · 19/04/2024 06:47

Bundobust is Indian and entirely vegetarian, but there's one in Brum, so you may be familiar already, if not you're missing out.

Dockland area and all the museums are good to wander around.

AlwaysFreezing · 19/04/2024 15:13

Quick, live update. The egg was awesome, proper veggie grub. Huge portions.

We love it here already. Is it always dead windy or have we come at a particularly windy time??

It is often very windy I'm afraid!

PleaseStandUp · 19/04/2024 15:46

It’s a bit windy today, but to be honest it’s always breezy in town/by the docks.
Places to drink, Jenny’s bar is good - youngish crowd but not a student dive.
My friends used to go to the pilgrim and heebiejeebies as students, both look similar vibes now. For some alfresco drinking kazimer gardens was ace if it’s open.
Avoid the slug and lettuce
