Has anyone managed to stopped or reduce snoring?

And if so, how??

I downloaded a snore recorder and oh my god it is FAR worse than I realised. Literally all night snoring (82%) and quite a lot of it loud.

I've started doing some mouth/tongue exercised and am actively losing weight but wondering if there's anything else I can do or use in the meantime?

DH's snoring reduced a lot when he gave up drinking - he lost a lot of weight too at that time so that might have had an impact. He still snores though, just nowhere near as much or as bad

Landlubber2019 · 18/04/2024 06:34

Might it be worth requesting a sleep study? Snoring is consistent with sleep apnea and noting you are overweight, this is something you can do to reduce snoring

spottedinthewilds · 18/04/2024 06:41

Are you very overweight OP?

If it's caused by nasal polyps you can have these removed and it can significantly reduce snoring. But obviously they have to be there in the first place. They look like lumps up your nose, although some of them can be deeper and not visible.

VoyOySaveloy · 18/04/2024 06:46

Yes DH's snoring is dramatically reduced when he sleeps propped up on lots of pillows. So much so that I am always caught out when we go on holiday and forget to take his extra pillows and his awful snoring returns.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 18/04/2024 06:51

@spottedinthewilds 3 or 4 stone so yes I am. I've lost nearly a st in the past few months but need to knuckle down.

I wake up with a dry mouth/sore throat so assuming I'm sleeping open mouthed

Weight loss (especially if you carry weight in your neck area)
No alcohol
Sleeping on side (opens airway better)

Sjk00 · 18/04/2024 07:01

Definitely weight loss, extra pillows to change the angle of your neck and throat and a ring from Amazon which goes on your little finger - bizarre but seemed to work!

soupfiend · 18/04/2024 07:04

Lost weight, wasnt particularly fat in the neck but now Im silent to the extent that my OH thought I wasnt alive when I stopped snoring.

Usernamewassavedsuccessfully · 18/04/2024 07:10

Lose weight
No booze
No dairy
These are the things that make the most difference to me.

WhiteLeopard · 18/04/2024 07:12

Definitely weight loss. For me, there's pretty much a line - above that weight I snore, below that weight I don't snore much (unless I am lying on my back).

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 18/04/2024 07:22

@soupfiend that's reassuring. How much did you lose,if you dont mind?.

OP posts:
RampantIvy · 18/04/2024 07:25

Do you sleep on your back?

Well at the time I stopped snoring and realised it was having that effect from weight loss, Im guessing around 4 stone ish? I cant remember when it stopped exactly. Im just on my way to losing 10 now, nearly there.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 18/04/2024 07:30

@RampantIvy I'm.pretty sure I sleep on my side.thats how I start at least.

@soupfiend that's amazing, well done!

I bought these things you put in your nostrils either side looked like a nose ring. Went away with some people and said never heard me but was in a separate bedroom . Only thing was I had such sore throat from it the next day. Think might have opened my airways. I think it did work as when got home I took never used them and throat was ok. Could have been though as was partying the weekend but seemed strange only for the 3 days.

Disturbia81 · 18/04/2024 07:35

Just from experience with a few men, one was weight related and stopped when lost weight.
One was slim but an alcoholic, snored even on rare sober nights.
So I'd say from bad habits.
But to chuck an anomaly in, knew one person who snored when slim but it stopped when they became overweight!

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 18/04/2024 07:37

Before I got fat, I know I'd snore when I'd been drinking. I've been single a few years now though and not really sure when it got so bad. I know I wake myself up with it sometimes. I was shocked at how bad ut is though, and wonder how I sleep through it!

OP posts:
RampantIvy · 18/04/2024 07:41

If you are waking yourself up with it I'd be concerned that you might have sleep apnoea.

DH is skinny and has very severe sleep apnoea. He now uses a CPAP machine.

Sorry I mean closed my air waves.

LittleFloatingGhost · 18/04/2024 07:45

I developed a dairy intolerance a few years ago. If I eat dairy, along with other symptoms, I snore, loudly! 😂

WoodBurningStov · 18/04/2024 07:45

My snoring started when I gained a little of weight.

Squirrelsonthescaffolding · 18/04/2024 08:01

This seems useful https://britishsnoring.co.uk/itests-2021/

it’s an online questionnaire that gives you the likely causes of your snoring and what to do about it.

i found it through a link on a uk healthcare site, private but they have registered professionals working there and have nhs contracts so I can’t vouch for it but seemed likely to be reliable to me (as someone with clinical qualification in a different area).

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 18/04/2024 08:11

That was my concern @RampantIvy, although that happens less than it used to abd only when I'm drifting off or early morning snoozing.

Thanks @Squirrelsonthescaffolding I'll have a look at the link later.

If ever I needed motivation for eating more healthily, this is it.

My snoring seems to have improved massively recently. I’m not sure if it’s because I’ve been doing some snoring exercises I saw posted on here or because I’ve lost 6 lbs recently.
The mouth exercise I’ve been doing most is pressing my tongue to the roof of my mouth.
I was always getting moaned at for snoring when I fell asleep on the sofa and waking myself up snoring as I fell asleep at night. It hasn’t happened for a while and DH says my snoring has improved at night. Also DD says she hasn’t heard me snoring from her room next door in a while!
