Can I afford a second child?

I'm wondering what practical financial things do I need to consider when deciding if I can afford to have a 2nd child as I'm thinking about getting pregnant again.

I have an 18mo, still have all her baby stuff so don't need to buy anything. I EBF last time and would intend to with 2nd. We have an OK sized 2 bed (rented long term from family so secure), bedrooms are good sizes so 2 kids could share for at least next 7/8 years.

Husband and I both work part time at different times so nursery isn't expensive. 18mo goes 2 afternoons a week so this would double but still wouldn't be much. We don't earn loads each month but we're very frugal and have plenty of savings so maternity is fine.

So in the next few years it wouldn't cost much...but what about future? School uniforms/pocket money/what else do I need to think about?

Do you drive? If so, extra car seat.

More nappies.

General days out tbh, or just normal activities. Soft play for 2 kids can get quite pricey where I am.

Also depends where you are etc but i’ve had to pay for private dentistry for mine.

More clothes if different genders.

And two lots of nursery fees for a bit.

Childcare during school holidays if needed.

Hobbies/swimming lessons.

Will you be saving for a bigger property eventually so they can have their own room?

@MariaVT65 Thanks that's all helpful. Yes we save as much as we can towards a house deposit for the future

Car seats, extra clothing as maybe they might be different sizes in different seasons/ times of the year. Food , swimming etc

Nursery costs x 2

Holidays

Schooling so you have a good school around you or are you going private?

A big future cost is university and halls could you survive if both were studying at the same time

Oh yes very good point about clothes being for the wrong season! This should only impact the first 2 years while the clothes go by months in age range.
