Teen stories from the 90s (or earlier) that would never be allowed today

And most for good reason!

My sister who was 15/16 in 1997 told me the story of when her and her friends (same age) used to go to/hang out at a blokes flat to smoke fags and weed, he was 26. One of her friends was shagging his his upstairs neighbour, also 26, and one day (whilst the girls were playing truant) the guy upstairs's girlfriend went storming upstairs and caught them. She threw a glass at my sisters friend, cutting her face.

The guy downstairs apparently drove them to a&e where she received some butterfly stitches (all in their school uniform) then dropped them off at school 🤔 No way would anyone get away with this nowadays without serious questions!

Do you have any teen stories you'd never get away with nowadays?

This thread is laugh out loud funny.
I was a teen in the 80'ties.
I was the opposite.
Didn't really like alcohol till early twenties.
Never smoked or took drugs.
My dd, ironically was a real party animal in her late teens..,,must have skipped a generation.

RespiceFinemKarma · 17/04/2024 19:38

Group of girls at our school used to hang out with a friend's dad and his mates. They were 13/14/15 and his mates were all 40+. Used to make the girls sit on their laps, get them drunk, tell them they were gorgeous. As far as I know nothing physical ever happened other than one kissing one of them and grabbing her boob (bad enough) but the parents all used to drop the girls over there and seemed to be aware the plan would be to get drunk with the older guys there...

Chrispackhamspoodle · 17/04/2024 19:41

My Dad fully supported me hitchhiking to Glastonbury festival on my own from Norfolk when I was 16. And I got there ...and managed to get in for free, which was lucky as I only had £15 on me.Bumped into my mates and managed to get a lift home at the end of the festival .It could have gone so horribly wrong.Instead I had a great time.

WonderingWanda · 17/04/2024 19:47

Pretty much did most of these things too. I'm absolutely horrified at what I got up to when I look at my own children. The lies I used to tell and the danger I put myself in and that was with fairly liberal parenting. It was also in a notorious seaside resort full of nightclubs and it as prett ly much acceptable for teenagers to go out underage drinking. It was so much fun though.

WonderingWanda · 17/04/2024 19:50

Sorry, forgot to actually answer the question. Going to nightclubs aged 13. Telling my parents I was going to sleepovers but sneaking off to clubs with my much older boyfriend then spending the night at his....what was his Dad thinking?

PuttingDownRoots · 17/04/2024 19:55

It got out the PE teacher was seeing a Sixth Former and she was pregnant.

All that happened was he was asked to leave at the end of the year... no fuss, no punishment.

I think he would be hounded with pitchforks now!

MenopauseSucks · 17/04/2024 19:59

When Beastie Boys 'Licensed to Ill' came out in 1986, we used to hitchhike to the nearby town, nick VW badges then flog them at school...

LoobyDop · 17/04/2024 20:13

I had one fake ID to get me on the bus for 10p, and one to get me into the pub at the end of the ride.

hernameisbecca · 17/04/2024 20:18

Going to nightclubs at 15 and getting in without ID. Once I even took my 13 year old sister!
All having much older boyfriends. My sister was 14 and her boyfriend was 20. He used to stay over every weekend in her room. They were together for 2 years and no-one batted an eyelid.
I was 15 with a 22 year old boyfriend at one point. I don't think stuff like that happens these days.
Stopping off at the council flats on the way to school and spending the day skiving and school wouldn't ever ring parents to find out where you were!
Writing notes and forging your mums signature saying you needed to leave at lunch time for an appointment so instead you could go and skive in some random man's flat with your mates.

I think the OP's story would be called grooming today and most definitely does still happen.

Oh goodness I hope that doesn't happen now!

Went to boozy BBQS at ‘cool’ teachers houses in 6th form, kissed a teacher in front of other teachers in 6th form, clubbing at 14, hitching lifts (in London where we lived). 😳🫣

MermaidEyes · 17/04/2024 20:27

Going on a school trip aged about 14 and half the group getting hammered on booze sneaked in then throwing up everywhere. Same trip that some of the female teachers took their (non teacher) boyfriends on, who saw all the teenage girls wandering round the lodge we stayed in in our nightwear.
Also being blind drunk in the town centre at 16 on cheap wine on a Saturday night and being stopped by police and told to find a bus or taxi and go home.

HRTQueen · 17/04/2024 20:32

My friend had an older boyfriend who was in the music business (or said he was) he lived on a very nice new estate in Fulham with a building management office (that was a flat) on-site. We used to go and wait for him and would hang around the management office. Quite a number of teenagers did and the estate manager (he was probably 55-60) would let us drink and smoke weed and would supply it himself. We thought he was great

Her parents and my mum knew we would had become friends with him and just said to us be careful around him. They must have known in the very least we had been drinking at times

years later my mum said I thought it was all a bit strange 🙄

Youdontknowmedoyou · 17/04/2024 20:35

Staying in the school's holiday house in France, drinking the cheap plonk from the local tabac and hiding the bottles in the gutters 😁 happy days.

TheProvincialLady · 17/04/2024 20:38

My friend and I answered an advert in the paper looking for volunteers to be photographed by an amateur ‘glamour’ photographer. My mum said no and told me that a glamour photographer was page 3 stuff but I didn’t believe her so we went anyway. The man had set up his garage as a studio. Once he learned we were under 16 (I was 15 but looked about 13 max) he said we had to keep our tops on. He wasn’t pervy towards us or anything but heaven knows why he wanted photos of skinny girls.

It’s weird to think there might still be photos out there of my friend and me in our bikinis!

Riverlee · 17/04/2024 20:44

Going on a weekend away aged 16 and drinking Blue nun with the instructor in his caravan .

Going on another youth holiday abroad and we had an onsite bar serving vodka etc. Everone got drunk (aged sixteen above) during this holiday.

Dated someone several years older in late teens. No one batted an eyelid. Would be hugely frowned upon today.

Everyone knew which was the Underage Pub in town. In fact , most towns had a pub in which you knew you would more successfully get in.

Grange Hill had an episode whereby some of the girls (Trisha?) got into the car of local lads on a school visit to St Albans.

GellerYeller · 17/04/2024 20:45

The corner shop selling one cigarette and two matches at 20p a throw, to kids in uniform on their way to and from school.

Nc1704 · 17/04/2024 20:48

Bit of a sad one but after my mum died I just stopped going to school and absolutely no one checked up on me. I like to think that wouldn’t happen now.

VivienneDelacroix · 17/04/2024 20:50

Ah yes, most of what I thought were "relationships" when I was 14-18 were actually grooming, looking back through a 21st century lens.
At 13 there was an 18 year old whose car I used to sit in at the school bus stop every morning where he'd grope me. At 14 my "boyfriend" was 21.

Gross

TruthorDie · 17/04/2024 20:51

Yep. All of this sounds familiar to me! My contributions are:

-friend being left at home for the weekend aged 14, while her parents and younger siblings went to their static caravan in Wales (the glamour!). She was told she could have a “few friends round”. Cue 20 odd mates, both male and female getting drunk and smoking weed all weekend
-after GCSE exams, same friends family let us stay in their caravan miles away from home. Cue more drinking and smoking, plus snogging / shagging of locals
-girl in my form dating our form teacher after we left school so she was 16 and he was knocking 30.
-friend of mine at 15, had a 25 year old boyfriend and her mum let him stay over in her bedroom

Beingboredisgoodforyou · 17/04/2024 20:51

70's Duke of Edinburgh Award - all girl hiking trips of 15 year olds supervised by all male teachers who kept a barrel of beer in the boot of their car. Meeting/check in points were always pubs.
I've seen the photos so I know there were also parties at the same teachers houses at weekends. I never went to these because I would usually be staying with my 21 year old boyfriend. My mum didn't mind because he was working and still lived at home with his parents.
In pubs and clubs from 14 and almost never got refused. Had an argument once because I was in my school uniform and they refused to serve me. Convinced them I was 18 and in 6th form. I was 15/16.

Mairzydotes · 17/04/2024 20:53

I was at high school in the late 90s and my stories echo previous posts .

Corner shop selling single cigarettes to school kids.

Pub from 14, clubs from 15. We even managed to get in the big clubs at Newcastle. I'm sure we ended up staying at some random flats afterwards. One we gatecrashed a bunch of butch lesbians sleepover , and once we were at a flat and people turned up in the morning and took the furniture.

Dating 18/19 year olds when we were 15 . By 17 , we'd moved on to 30 year olds.

I remember wanting to go to alternative club night on a weeknight, and I was only allowed to go if my dad drove through and picked me up.

Getting my tongue pierced age 15 . No questions asked by the piercer. And that was a reputable place!

tarheelbaby · 17/04/2024 20:54

@Nc1704 , that's so sad about your mum. I think there was so much less care for pupils in that situation then.

macshoto · 17/04/2024 20:54

'Night navigation' to the pub as part of DOfE Bronze expedition training. Got served alcohol as a 14 y/o.

Eggplant44 · 17/04/2024 20:56

I suspect that now, as back then, teens are up to a great deal of mischief that their parents are not aware of.
