Wine Gift for birthday

Hello all. Just after some ideas go get some nice wine or prosecco for a birthday gift for a 50th for my friend. Any recommendations would be much appreciated, as I don’t know much about these things.

Do you have a wine shop near you? Go there and ask for advice.

I'll preface this by saying, I don't drink anymore, but when I did, they were amazing at selecting things I wouldn't have chosen myself that were far superior (and cheaper) than what I would have gotten at say, my local Tesco.

I agree with this. I am not in the UK, but I used to fear nice wine shops because of price. Wine shops have actual expertise and get good value wines as opposed to just inexpensive wines. I would definitely go to a specialist and ask for help.

Do they drink? People frequently buy me wine, but I don't like it. Any of it.

I never buy wine for other people because I think you need to know what type they like. I'm not sure that a random recommendation from someone else will work.

The one near me has sadly closed.
I’ll see if there’s another further afield. I was thinking of popping into M&S but will look into an alternative wine shop instead.

I’d get a bottle of English sparkling wine, a bit more unusual. Chapel Down or Ridgeview are lovely

Thanks very much for the comments so far. Also, are standard Love to Shop Vouchers good to add or should I just give the cash.

A few friends have collected some cash and we’ve £100 to add to the wine. We’re getting flowers too.

Went to a wine shop and got what looks like quite nice wine. The owner assured me it’s lovely.

Just need to get the voucher now . I think i’ll get the one that can be spent at multiple places. I decided against just the cash

Bit late for me to answer now... but if somebody is going to give me wine for a gift I would far rather they have me a bottle (or six) of what I like best, rather than something celebratory or 'good' that I won't actually like. For instance I very much dislike dry or semi dry white wine, whether it is 'good' champagne or cheap rot gut. I just don't like it. But I love a sparkling moscato. I also like a sweet, fruity and floral white wine, or a rich fruity red like a merlot. I drink very little and to be honest a bottle of wine would probably sit in my cupboard for several years, but a 250ml bottle might well get drunk, so a couple of little bottles of a sparkling rose moscato, or a bog standard merlot, would be much nicer (for me) than a large bottle of either, and I really wouldn't appreciate a bottle of champagne or prosecco at all (it would probably get given to somebody else).
