What's so special about a SMEG kettle?

I never thought I'd be making a thread on a kettle but here I am 😂 so I'm buying my first house and have started buying bits and bobs ready to move in.

Today on my list is a kettle and toaster.

I have been browsing all morning and keep seeing the SMEG kettle and toaster which I must say, they are stunning!

But £150 for a kettle?! It seems excessive, however everybody that I know who has one seems to love it.

My question is what makes this brand so special? Does it actually make a difference to the standard Russell hobs type of brands.

I'm just looking for opinions really from those who have a SMEG and if they are worth it and what makes them so different to the others Smile

I have a Smeg kettle/toaster/oven and I think the main difference to other standard kettles is that you can get the Smeg ones repaired if needed, whereas I presume you would just replace a broken Russell Hobbs 🤷‍♀️.
I found my Smeg kettle quite noisy and use the hot water tap instead-I don’t think they’re really worth the price tag but if you love it then go for it.

We bought a Smeg kettle last week for £50. It's a refurbished one on eBay. Tiny little chip on the back but not noticeable. They had lots of colours to choose from. We went for cream. We are impressed with it. Worth looking on eBay 👍

Penguinsa · 17/04/2024 11:39

We have had smeg kettles and toaster. Its mainly about the appearance. Kettles have lasted reasonably well, the toaster did not so did not get another one, got a much cheaper one which works fine and still matches quite well. If you shop around you can get them cheaper some places than others.

Penguinsa · 17/04/2024 11:43

We had the blue which I love and then the white. Price can vary by colour.

When I was younger and bought my own flat I bought a lovely looking cream Smeg fridge freezer

It looked lovely but was rubbish as an actual fridge freezer. Things just kept going wrong or breaking off like the rubber seal and didn't work properly.

I couldn't wait to get rid of it

I've never done style over substance again. Currently happy with a Bosch

InAMillion · 17/04/2024 11:47

They've had time to improve but there is absolutely no reason why they need to be that expensive

iamwhatiam23 · 17/04/2024 11:47

Smeg appliances are imo all style over substance! Expensive, look nice but break easily and often! If you want something in the expensive but durable range go for Dualit.

Hobbesmanc · 17/04/2024 11:49

I was so proud of my baby blue retro Smeg fridge when I bought my first home. But actually the internal fittings were really bad quality and it didn't last that long.

There's some cute delonghi ones in John Lewis

my toaster and kettle have lasted really well. Had them about 10 years

Thanks everyone. Interesting to read these comments as I never realised how expensive they are until I'm looking myself.

I think I'll go with a cheaper one for now as we're starting off and need to buy everything. I'd be gutted if I spent all that money and it didn't live up to my expectation!

I second Dualit kettles. Mine is about 15 years old and still trucking along cheerfully. Much better than the cheaper ones I used to have that lasted a few years.

Ariela · 17/04/2024 12:09

I also vote get a Dualit. Ours is on about a dozen times a day. Years old. Nothing else ever lasted as long.

FirstFallopians · 17/04/2024 12:17

I’m also in the market for a new kettle and toaster as ours have decided to stop working properly simultaneously. Happy to spend more at this stage if it’s good quality and sustainable.

I’m pretty settled on a Dualit toaster but not sure about the kettle- I hate matchy-matchy.

I’m just not sure about Smeg- like do I actually like it, or am I just being influenced?

maximist · 17/04/2024 12:21

I had my previous Russell Hobbs kettle for over 20 years, eventually the handle came off the lid - I did glue it back on as I loved the kettle, but it didn't look great, so I reluctantly replaced it was another RH one, glass this time. Both cost about £20 or thereabouts.

oberst · 17/04/2024 12:27

Nothing. I have kettle and toaster. Both have faded even though they've never been directly sat in the sun. Toaster broke and was replaced which was great. They look nice.

Penguinsa · 17/04/2024 12:28

I think our first SMEG kettle lasted about 8 years with heavy use and not the most careful of owners and have bought another one this year was about £130. But SMEG toaster only lasted about 3 years, daily use, but maybe once a day, and that was rubbish for the price so just bought a beko white one for £15 which matches the smeg kettle fairly well and that is doing brilliantly at a tenth of the price.

AdoraBell · 17/04/2024 12:30

I don’t know but my neighbours one was ruined by her relatives, put the electric kettle on the hob and forget about it🤦‍♀️

mitogoshi · 17/04/2024 12:32

More expensive toasters and kettles have more adjustment width, different temperatures of water etc but ultimately it's about style, no more, no less. What you spend over £30 or so isn't getting you a product that does more, just looks nice. If money is tight spend less basically

mitogoshi · 17/04/2024 12:34

I have Asda own brand currently, which replaced a 5 year old Sainsbury's own brand set (previous set cost £20 each, current £40 each)

FlannelandPuce · 17/04/2024 12:37

We were looking to buy a cream kettle a couple of months ago. We did look at smeg, but the base the kettle sits on it very cheap and flimsy looking. We bought a Dualit instead which we are pleased with and was in a different class in terms of build, and quality than the smeg. To answer your question smeg seemed all fur coat but no knickers.

Blahblahblahblahblahblahblahblahlalala · 17/04/2024 12:40

I live in an extremely hard water area. My kettles look disgusting in no time at all due to limescale. Wouldn’t be worth a pricey kettle as I end up having to chuck them. But to be honest I’m not overly keen on the look of the smeg kettles and it’s only dh that drinks hot drinks, so I’m not very invested in the kettle.

yeah happened to my friends. The fridge looked lovely but it wasn’t great space wise and didn’t last. They didn’t get another

DaftFlerken · 17/04/2024 12:53

It's the name plastered over them that really puts me off - makes me think of Red Dwarf & unpleasant things I don't want in my kitchen

Musiclover234 · 17/04/2024 12:54

We had a lovely wilko kettle for £15 i think. It lasted 7 years and looked nice. It boiled the water as needed. It was great. Now have a £25 tesco one.

Smeg products look great but are crazy money but people spend what they can afford i guess and as a mumsnet ‘low earner’ that’s what we cant afford!.

I was coming on to say the same. I love my swan appliances.
