Does this sound like a Dry Socket? Tooth removed

I had my second tooth removed yesterday. When the local anaesthetic wore off, it was sore but otherwise fine. Just slightly tender

Same thing this morning

This afternoon however, since about 2pm, it's a constant throbbing pain. The whole jaw on the side of the removal feels like I can't fully open it, and it's literally 'throb throb throb' with absolutely no break or let up.

It's such a weird feeling, it's irritating. Paracetamol and ibuprofen not touching it. It's like someone has broken something if that makes sense

The tooth came out easily. A bit of curly roots

I had a wisdom tooth removed on the other side a year ago. It too was a little sore, and then it started dripping this putrid smelling stuff. It was like a dead body Envy spoke to dentist who saw me and said dry socket. And he packed it with clove oil or something... but isn't dry socket really painful?

I'm just wondering if to go back to dentist or if this is a normal healing process.
Anyway, whatever it is, it's a horrible constant pain. But on a scale, not worse than when I had a gallbladder attacking me before removal. That was worse... see also appendicitis

Also, the teeth next to where the wisdom tooth were really ache, like she's tired removing them too but been unsuccessful

I know that's not the case because she commented on how smooth the removal was

I think it’s pretty normal for it to feel numb and a bit painful for 48 hours, I would wait and see how it feels tomorrow. I have had a few out, some have been fine and others have been painful for a while. Also the injections they use can effect nerve and things 😬.

I’ve had dry socket and regular painkillers didn’t touch it. It’s unbelievably painful. I’d call your dentist tomorrow if I were you and they will take a look at it and pack it if necessary.

@Lovemusic82 it's annoying isn't it

The constant throbbing is making me want to pull my teeth out to stop it for immediate relief Envy it's so persistent

Thank you. Hopefully they can fit me in if I can first thing

I've got some codeine so might take that when next due paracetamol

Good luck. It’s worth getting it looked at. When I had mine it was fine for the first 24 hours and then got worse and worse.

Dry socket pain is like broken jaw. Which it essentially is. It’s incredibly painful and persistent. I had it recently after what the dentist said was a trouble free extraction. You definitely could have this. I had to go each day for it to be cleaned and dressed. That one tooth cost me thousands but that’s another story

Yeah, weirdly, it's got worse since starting this thread Confused it's just so constant, I can't explain it but with other pains they're more in waves etc

This is just relentless, nothing changing the intensity of it

Sorry to hear this. Dental care is eye wateringly expensive isn't it

I was hoping they wouldn't charge me if it needed packing. My last one was under a different dentist but the clove oil thing was free

Dry socket isn’t a broken jaw. It is just that the blood clot hasn’t formed in the socket so it is open down to the jaw as there is nothing to protect it.

I would have thought it would be a continuation of the original treatment, I didn’t pay extra. I’d have paid anything if asked though!

Have you been using hot salt water mouth washes ( actually you don’t wash you just hold it over the socket). If you start them too soon or are over zealous then you can loosen and lose a clot that hasn’t quite matured.
Get in touch with your dentist tomorrow so they can see you before the weekend. A simple dressing is usually enough to solve the problem.
Personally I’ve never had to see a patient every day to treat a dry socket. Daily visits suggest that a dentist is keen on making a dent in your bank account rather treating your dry socket. Generally we prefer not to keep disturbing the socket so it can heal rapidly.

Thank you, so no I haven't as I was told by dentist no straws or proper brushes of teeth for 48 hours

I've been extra careful and just had a few shakes to keep my blood sugar normal, but forgot myself this afternoon earlier on and crunched on a handful of pretzel!

I don't smoke and I am bang on age 25 so thought I'd get away with it as the younger you are, the less risk of a dry socket, apparently

Dry socket is horrendous, speak to dentist asap and they can pack it out with clove oil and tobacco I think x
Get some clove oil when you can, and put it on cotton wool to bite on, that helps too.
Good luck 🍀

I had similar after removal and they had impacted the sinus nerve which apparently runs close to the teeth at the top / back. I got some cocodamol from emergency chemist and it did ease after that

JustAnotherDayWorkingAtHome · 16/04/2024 21:19

I've had two removals recently. Both were horrendously painful and probably peaked on day 2 or 3. I didn't get dry socket but was worried I had and went back to dentist. I had that throbbing thing in the teeth either side too. I had codeine for 2nd one it was that bad. Hope it eases up.

Titsywoo · 16/04/2024 21:20

I didnt get dry socket but still had an annoying ache in jaw in the spot where the tooth came out 10 days after an extraction. Dentist packed it and the pain went and never came back so even if it isn't dry socket it is worth having the packing done if you are having out of the ordinary pain.
