Can you hire someone to do this type of small task ?

I want to order a cake from a bakery which doesn’t do delivery. It’s a 5 hr drive from me.

Im thinking I could just order the cake for collection and pay someone to collect and then post it to me. Where would you be able to hire someone to do that? I thought Facebook but then you have to trust if you pay them first they won’t run off with your money, or they have to trust you’ll pay them once they’ve done it

Any ideas?

I would think a taxi driver would be your best bet. Try calling taxi firms close to the bakery?

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 16/04/2024 14:04

I would simply get a cake closer to home.

AbbeFausseMaigre · 16/04/2024 14:07

What kind of postage are you thinking? If it's a decorated celebration cake, wouldn't it need very careful packing for transport, which it won't be in if it has only been boxed for collection?

ghostbusters · 16/04/2024 14:07

What sort of cake is it? If you think it will survive postage, is it worth asking the bakery if they can courier it to you? I know you said they don't deliver but postage is different. You'll need to accept full responsibility for it in case it doesn't survive the journey.

Try shiplys or anyvan

givemushypeasachance · 16/04/2024 14:46

Most kinds of iced, decorated cake can't just be given to Royal Mail or Evri! The only cakes that just about travel are either well-packaged dense traybakes, like brownies, or things like hard-icing-covered fruit cakes.

You probably can find someone who could collect and hand-deliver the cake to you, if you must have that particular cake, but it wouldn't be cheap as 10 hours of driving (there and back) is a full day of work plus petrol costs.

Bjorkdidit · 16/04/2024 14:53

It's unlikely a decorated cake will survive any kind of parcel delivery and it will cost literally hundreds of pounds for it to be delivered in person. A five hour drive is 10 hour round trip so even paying someone NMW is over £100 then you've got the cost of the vehicle/fuel etc.

You might find a courier (not parcel) service to do it, but it still won't be cheap.

Don't put a fancy cake in the post!

Find someone local to make one.

Greywitch2 · 16/04/2024 14:56

It will cost an absolute fortune!

You would be far better to buy a cake locally.

Dartmoorcheffy · 16/04/2024 14:58

Find someone local. Or maybe ask on Facebook if anyone in your area is passing that way and could collect for you.

fieldsofbutterflies · 16/04/2024 15:00

You can't just get a random person to pick up a cake and post it to you. The bakery would need to courier it to you, but it would cost an absolute fortune.

Just order from a bakery that offers delivery.

TokyoSushi · 16/04/2024 15:02

What's so special about the cake? Where is it currently, or where would it be?!

Teacupsandrollups · 16/04/2024 15:03

A ten hour drive isn’t really a small task, is it?!

DrJoanAllenby · 16/04/2024 15:12

There must be someone nearer who can create a similar cake?

heldinadream · 16/04/2024 15:28

Then your postal service will just chuck it over the wall. Crumbs! No, don't do that - you'd be better off hiring a chef to come to your house and make cake!

MILTOBE · 16/04/2024 15:43

Don't have a cake sent via post!

Surely there are nearer places you can use?

Wishimaywishimight · 16/04/2024 15:51

I really want a pic of the cake 😄

AreThereSomewhereIslands · 16/04/2024 16:00

I really want a pic of the cake after it's been through the post! Grin

mondaytosunday · 16/04/2024 16:13

A courier - before internet we relied on them at work. Five hours away will be ££ though. No one closer?

ApocalypseNowt · 16/04/2024 16:21

Just ask the bakery to stuff it in a jiffy bag, then you can reassemble it at your end Grin

Mix56 · 16/04/2024 17:35

Uber

Boomer55 · 16/04/2024 17:40

Buy one locally. 🙂

babyhiding · 16/04/2024 18:06

What sort of cake is this that requires 5 hour trip to pick up?

UnravellingTheWorld · 16/04/2024 18:25

I would try a taxi as well. At an old job they used to get a taxi on occasion to transport some unaccompanied documents (idk why courier wasn't an option!)

I dread to think what it would cost.

Mumaway · 16/04/2024 18:27

Shiply are pretty good for moving stuff. Generally eBay furniture, but anything. Van drivers travelling back from a delivery quote to bring your stuff. Occasionally there are time restrictions for pickups etc, which the cake shop would have to be happy with too
