Visiting Germany

We’re going to visit friends near Frankfurt for a few days in September.
We’re thinking of going to stay in Heidelberg for a couple of nights. We’ll be getting around by train. Any must sees?
Not too bothered about visiting Frankfurt itself but wondered if any other places between Heidelberg and Frankfurt?

@Allfurcoatandnoknickers

I spent 6 months in Heidelberg as a student when I was on my year abroad as part of a Modern Languages degree.

I think that you will like it there!

If you are there in September, you may well catch the fireworks over the Castle.

Welcome to Heidelberg!

Wuerzburg is about an hour by train southeast of Frankfurt. Has a massive castle up on the hill, a cute chapel on another hill, a baroque palace (Residenz) with a famous ceiling fresco by Tiepolo, many churches, some famous Riemenschneider works dotted around the city, vinyards, some good places to eat,..

I just realized you said between Frankfurt and Heidelberg, Wuerzburg would be a little out of the way.
I haven't been for years but Heppenheim used to be really nice, probably still is, also Bensheim and Weinheim.

You could do the train from Frankfurt across to Cologne - the route is incredibly beautiful - right along the Rhine for long stretches. Cologne has good museums, the amazing cathedral, of course, and a lovely vibe, though it's not pretty like Heidelberg (was damaged badly in the war). (It would also have to be a separate trip as it's not on the way to Heidelberg). The Vulkaneifel - south of Cologne - is beautiful for walks. Lots of volcanic landscapes, hence the name.
